To find out which one, download gspot or avicodec, and open the file with them (drag the movie onto the gspot or avicodec window to do it quickly). The video codec is usually identified by its fourcc (four character code).
Once you know what video codec the movie uses, you can download and install it.
Here’s a few commonly encountered ones. I’ll list them in the format
fourcc : video codec name : where to download
DX50 or DIVX : DivX 4, 5 or 6 : http://www.divx.com
XVID : Xvid : http://www.moviecodec.com/downloads/8d.html
DIV3 or DIV4 : DivX 3 : http://www.moviecodec.com/downloads/22d.html
