Hi everyone I have a problem with my VirtualDub software. I have an .AVI video which I’ve worked on a couple of weeks ago, but I need to work on it again with the VirtualDub. The thing is when I tried to open the video with the software a message appears telling me “Could’n locate decompressor for format FMP4 (unknown. VirtualDub requires a VFW compatible codec to decompress video. Directshow codecs are not suitable”. Does anyone kow where can I find such codec, and how would that work, like what do I need to do, once found the codec, so that my video can be read. Thank you thank you ! I appreciate any knid of help or hint possible...

FMP4 is FFMpeg MPEG-4. ffdshow-tryouts has a decoder for it.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout
During install make sure to check the boxes 'VFW Interface' and 'VirtualDub' under 'Application plugins'.
If you already have other codecs, and you don’t need ffdshow to decode anything except FMP4 in VirtualDub, uncheck everything at the two steps where it lets you choose what codecs ffdshow should decode.
When you’re done, go to your start menu (all programs on XP), ffdshow, VFW configuration. Select the decoder tab, and click on Codecs on the upper left. Click on “Other MPEG4” on the right, and in the middle column make sure it’s NOT disabled (libavcodec is my recommended choice, but I guess xvid should work fine too). Then click apply and your FMP4 video should be openable in VirtualDub.

anonymous' instructions worked for me. I had the same error before, now I can open/edit fmp4 files in VirtualDub. I got a VBR warning (non standard with AVI), but the video itself is fine. Thanks!

If you have a VBR audio warning, it’s probably best to work with NanDub. It’s identical to VirtualDub except it handles VBR audio.
