If this doesn’t work, I’m not sure what else to suggest besides uninstall xvid, and redownload the binaries from www.koepi.org.

I generally tend not to give direct links, since they can change over time, but in your case here it goes
http://www.koepi.org/XviD-1.0.3-20122004.exe

Aschwin de Haas Guest | When opening a file in real player I get xvidcode.dll not found, the file does play and I have video and sound. But every time this error message keep coming. I tried your link (see above) and runned the program. Duringinstallation I get the following message:
C:/Windows/system32/xvid.ax
An error occured when replacing the existing file: DeleteFile failed; code 5
Access denied
Now I am the only user so no access seems strange to me.....I have totally no idea what this is about, can somebody help me?

Do you have administrator privileges when doing the install? If so, when you start your computer, look for that file (xvid.ax) and delete it manually (don’t open any video files prior to doing so). Then run the install again. If you can’t delete it get back to me. There’s utilities out there that allow deletion of files before logon (such as some nasty viruses), but I can’t recall their name.

Aschwin de Haas Guest | Problem solved thank you, first I couldn’t delete it, because it was in use? But just before I wanted to post a reply I thought let’s try it again and now it did delete. Still I am always looking to learn things about soft and hardware. I you have time and want to explain, what is this all about? What does the installation package do and what does xvid.ax do? thank you very much for your help.

heyutang Guest | I have a similar problem: installing the xvid codec is impossible. I get “Delete file failed, code 5 " error message when trying to install.
I can’t find the xvid.ax file on my computer,(also not in the system32 folder) and I am logged in as the administrator. I have tried rebooting but that did not help.
Any ideas?

topcat139 Guest | If you run into this problem , when installing an update, just go to the file that is having a problem and try to delete the lastletter or two of the extension, then click to retry the install. If you cannot change nor delete the file, then give Unlocker (ver 1.75 latest) a shot. It adds an unlock option to your right click menu. The problem is that the codec is locked. Possibly by an open app, like Gspot, etc, or just wasn’t released by thye ;last app that used it. Generlayy you can change the extension even if you can’t delete it.
If the ext. change works, remember to delete the file on your next reboot, it will be released by then.
luck!
