Hello..

I have a piece of footage in mkv format which is in 1080P format, which I’d like to extract frames from. My system supports up to 1600x1200 resolution, so I can’t use screen-grab options.

Is there any piece of software (possibly free, but I’d guess I’d buy if there is no free option)
that can be used to extract frames from mkv files in full resolution (not display resample resolution) to clipboard or files?

thanks

If you play the file in Media Player Classic, you can press F5 whenever you want to grab a frame. The capture will be sent to your my pictures folder. For more accuracy, you can pause, or use the step button to step frame by frame. You can zoom the movie to whatever size you want during playback, but it won’t affect the capture, which will be at the original frame size.
If you need filters to decode the movie in mpc (perhaps because you normally use a third-party player like videolan), I’d suggest ffdshow-tryout.

I think you can do the same with VLC Media Player, but the key combo is ctrl-alt-S, and it’s harder to stop at a specific frame.
