I want to be able to play xvid and divx on my TV.
My PC has a regular (non-dvd) burner.
Can I go buy a divx capable DVD player and simply burn data discs with Nero Express?
Or do I need a DVD burner and better burning software?

It should work just fine. Just be sure to read the DivX-certified standalone DVD player’s specs in details before making your purchase. Like can it read CD-R, CD-RW, DivX, Xvid, or anything else. (Not all DivX-certified players can read Xvid for example.)
