Hello. I will get to the point, I downloaded a WMV file which simply won’t open using Windows Media Player. This error message comes up

" Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

Phoned Microsoft and they could not help me. Is there anyone out there who can ??? Also I am a newbie so if I am posting in the wrong place I am sorry :-/

Windows Media Player is LOUSY at giving error messages. You should instead use a diagnostic utility like gspot or avicodec. Then you can download any missing codec once you find out what codec the file uses. If neither program recognizes the file type, chances are it’s a fake.
