Hey, I got an Avi off bittorrent that I really want to play. Ive never had any problems with AVI files before...so i think the file name will give you guys some insight.
XXXXXXX.(TCR).DivX.TS.Xcel.avi
(xxx is obviously the file name which I wont mention)
any help will be really appreciated!

well its divx wink
if you only have divx 5.02 installed and the file was encoded with a newer ver. it wont play.
so upgrade or if thats it try ffdshow http://www.divx-digest.com/software/ffdshow.html

Okay, so I’m in the same boat as Distalled, but I have the added complication of viewing these files on a Mac.

Is playing one of these files (TCR).DivX.TS.Xcel.avi posible on a Mac? I’ve got a couple now, and all I get is a blank screen and no sound when I try to play them. I checked out the ffdshow link and it is Windows (puke) only.

Any suggestions (other than switching to Windows, see above) will be greatly appreciated.

Robbie

Thnx for the link Classified, i checked the files with a Divx medic prog, and it turned out they were 99% false info, so thats why I was having problems. Stupid bittorrent...

I also have downloaded a bunch of avi files from bit torrent. I have tried every codex I can get my hands on. I have also installed Pinnacle Studio 9, DivX Codec 5.1.1 Pro, Xvistraight 1.0.2.

Here is the file name if it helps

Filename.WS.XviD-fov.avi.

I have also used Gspot to test the file and it says it can’t understand the format.

I really would like to be able to watch the episodes I missed during the marathon. If anyone has any ideas please shoot them my way.

Well I dont know if this helps but it helped me. I tried and tried to play my avi files on my machine that could be played on my friends machines. I found out a few of the files I was trying to play used the xvid codec so I downloaded the xvid player. i assumed the codec would be included with the player but it wasnt. the files would not play using the xvid player and i was stuck again. Not until I did further research did i download the xvid codec and now i can watch these files. Seems logical that xvid would include their codec in their player but thats just me wink

Also gspot is a great codec recogniser

not sure why you still cant play the file while gspot recognises that you are able to play it. It should tell you what else you can download in order to play it.

GSpot says DivX is misconfigured. I’ve repeatedly tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but nothing fixes it.

Following is what GSpot says. Anybody have any ideas. I have attempted to register the DLL without success.

I looked up that xvid-fov stuff here, and a possibility is that downloading the k-lite codec pack may allow you to play it...not guaranteed, but it IS worth a shot ya know.
VLC is NOT the answer to everything either....it won’t work if YOU don’t have the codec...besides, to play something, why-O-WHY should a person have to download yet another program for?

all 3 versions can be found here for the k-lite codec pack:
