HD DVD -> x254 codec = how much degradation in quality?

I downloaded a sample file encoded in x254. It’s a short moment from a movie, done in 1080p. The picture is stunning but my question is: how much “picture quality loss” does such encoding of HD DVD content suffer? I don’t have HD DVD player, so I can’t really compare but if you guys know, please share your ideas.
