doggy Guest | Hello to one and all. I am new to this board and seek your help with a problem on avi files.
Recenty, my windows XP got corrupt and I had to reinstall it as the old one could not be restored. Prior to the corruption, all avi files were working well on my computer on a number of players that I have installed; Real, Windows Media Player, Win DVD and others.
Now, after installing the new windows, I have installed almost every program that I had on the older version but now when I try to play any avi file, it just starts and then gets jammed or paused. The player and windows don’t get jammed and the audio on the avi file can also be heard but the video (vision) gets jammed ? What could possibly be the cause of this ? Could someone tell me or help me with it ? I mostly rip VCDs and DVDs and save files in avi format using Divx 5.5 codec (prior to the corruption of my windows - haven’t done any after the re-installing windows).
I have installed VP6 codec pack and couple o other codecs too but the avi files are just not working the way they should - all of them are getting jammed after a couple seconds, as I said, the audio on the file works normally but the video gets jammed.
Also, I have been hearing about FOURCC codes ? What exactly are these and how to find out which code the file I’m playing has ? How would it help to know this code, I mean what shall I do after I get to know this code.
I will be very grateful to anyone who’d help me out on this. Thanks, Michael.

This page has a list of diagnostic tools you can use to find out fourcc’s (well, videoinspector doesn’t tell fourcc’s but it does give the general codec name).

Also if you’re playing divx files, make sure you have the latest version of divx (5.2.1). I remember version 5.1 had a bug in it that made it a processor hog (very slow).
