I recently have to change my main drive on my PC. Before doing that
I moved all media files and other important documents to a second
internal hard drive on the same machine. After setting everything up
(Win XP/SP2) I attempted to move all my media files and the
documents back but was not able to do so. I keep getting “access
denied, make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that
the file is not currently in use”. When I attempt to 'open' a media
file using RealOne Player and MS Media Player respectively. A window
appear with the following message:
RealSystem Messages -
Requested file not found. The link you followed may be outdated or
inaccurate.

Windows Media Player -
0xC00D11D2: Cannot access the file
Windows Media Player cannot access the file. You may encounter this
error
message for one of the following reasons:

a.. This file is currently in use. Close the file, and then try
again.
b.. You do not have permission to access the server or other location
where the file is stored. Verify that you have the appropriate access
rights, and then try again.
c.. You do not have permission to access the proxy server. Verify
that you
have the appropriate access rights, and then try again.
d.. If you are trying to copy a track from a CD to your hard disk,
you may
not have permission to copy to the specified hard disk location.
Verify that
you have the appropriate access rights, and then try again. If the
problem
persists, try copying to another folder.

Some of these files are very important relating to my job.
have no idea what happened. Am willing to try any ideas. HELP!

I would presume the files are on an NTFS partition. NTFS uses file permissions, and when you format your hard disk and reinstall Windows NT/2000/XP, even if the username/productid/other identifiers is the same, the new account will use a different ID. That’s why when you delete an account in Windows NT/2000/XP you’ll get the popup warning message: “Each user is represented by a unique identifier which is independent of the user name. Once a user is deleted, even creating an identically named user in the future will not restore access to resources which currently include the user in their access control lists."
But back to your problem: what you would need to do is take ownership of the files in question. The easiest way is to right click them and choose the security tab, then click advanced, then click the owner tab and add your username to the list. BTW you need administrator rights to be able to do this. You might also want to do it for folders in the root directory, then apply the settings to all files and subdirectories. Here’s a page with diagrams you can follow:

The same thing is happening to me, but when moving files on my own computer. If I take a file and move it to another folder, i get the access is denied message. i can’t acess, move, copy, cut, or do anything with the file. I have permissions on all the files and i’ve tried safe mode already.

Do you have administrator rights and did you TAKE OWNERSHIP of the files?

Can you please explain to me how to take ownership of document/file. There is no security tab in the Property setting.

Same problem. There is no “security” tab with an “advanced” option for me to work with in Windows XP SP2. There is a box for network sharing or for users on the same computer. I checked that on hard drive C and on CD backup drive F. I tried to drag a folder to F. F is CD-RW with some folders/files on it. I still get access denied. I’d love to overcome this problem this weekend.

Sorry I was very puzzled when you said there was no security tab.
I had to dig in the web here
http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/archive/topic/11280-1.html (very bottom of the page)
Turns out Windows XP Home Edition doesn’t have a security tab unless you start in safe mode!!! I never knew that (I’ve only used Windows NT 4, 2000 Professional, and XP Professional).
Once you boot into safe mode, just take ownership of the file.

The safe mode approach also works for me in XP professional media center edition - There was no security tab until I rebooted in Safe Mode. From there I was able to take ownership. Remeber that if you are taking ownership of a directory, select the checkbox to have the rights inherited to folders and files within that directory - otherwise you still might not be able to access at the file level.

A quick way to allow immediate access to the filez locally is to share the folder. I struggled with this “access denied” problem for hours until I accidentally noticed that after sharing the folder I could do whatever I want with the files within. (Right-click — >“sharing and security”wink

Hi guys, I also have this problem. I’ve tried the whole safe mode thing. I installed windows xp home onto a new HD...and am trying to transfrer the MY DOCUMENTS folder from my old drive, onto the new one. Ive booted into safe mode and gone in as admin, and change permissions on the old drive to allow full access to pretty much every profile listed. The my documents folder still says access denied. All other folder in DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS is acccessible. ONLY my docs is blocked out. When i try to change permission for that particular folder, it says i cannot view or modify permissions for this folder and all buttons are grey. I have never had this prob before and am totally puzzled. If anyone could help, would b great. Cheers

I had the access denied problem as well, when trying to slave data from my old winxp(pro) system drive.

I finally figured out that I needed backup operator privileges to gain access. This was not enabled by default on my user account, even though it had administrator status.

Right click My Computer select manage select local users and groups-groups folder, and add your user name to the backup operators category. The security tab will now appear on the old system drive. Add your user name and the priveleges you desire. Problem solved.

Hi, this is all to do with loosing the inherited permissions of your files. Easily done if you start playing around with folder permissions etc...

You need to take control of the files again by right clicking the folder that they are in, going to sharing and security:

If you do not have this, and in some XP Pro versions this is not available, then go into windows explorer, goto tools, folder options, view - then scroll to the bottom and untick the simple file sharing box - this will give you the security option in XP Pro (no safe mode needed).

Back to the point - goto security, goto advanced tab, got owners - click on you (your named computer) and click apply

that way you take back ownership of the files

I am afraid this doesn’t work in XP home edition. Simple file sharing is defaulted. I will try the safe mode fix. What I really would like to know as well as WHY does this happen, HOW to stop it for good!??!

Hi,
Not sure if anyone is still reading this.
I am having the same problem. If I move a file to a different location I get the access denied message, I cannont copy, move, open etc. Re-booting in safe mode and changing permissions works, however it does not fix the problem. Next time I move any file to a different location I get the access denied message. This is VERY anoying, as I’m moving files around my computer all the time, I cant reboot in safe mode every couple of days.

Like the above post, does anyone know how to perminatley fix this problem???

Loupou22, that really did the trick. Thanks, a lot. Nothing else worked for me except that. Didn’t even have to go into safe mode. Now I just need to uninstall Unlocker, Gibo@, etc. Hope everyone else gets their files unlocked as well!
