It’s mostly codec dependent. If your wmv file uses one of the older asf codecs (MS-MPEG 4 v1, 2, or 3, Duck TrueMotion, Vivo H.263, VDOWave, MS H.263, or ClearVideo) then it will probably work. If the wmv file uses one of the more modern codecs like windows media video 7, 8, or 9, or windows media screen 7 or 9, it’s unlikely to work (I’ve had a few work with wmv 7, but I could only play the avi in windows media player 9, not 6.4!)
For conversion to mpeg use tmpgenc (the free version is at tmpgenc.net, not .com). You will need to make minor modification for tmpgenc to be able to read wmv files: go to options, then click environmental settings. then on the vfapi plugin tab right click 'directshow multimedia file reader' and choose higher priority. set the priority to 4 or something. There’s probably other tools out there; to find them just keep googling.

Lily Guest | hi pavan! Actually, you also can try winavi video converter which can be got from http://www.winavi.com . It can convert wmv files to avi and mpg with stunning video and audio quality. Most of all, the converting speed is amazingly fast.

general369 Guest | hi,
i tried the winave, and converted wmv to mpeg1 so i could burn to vcd using nti cd/dvd maker, and the output was an extremely small screen on my tv. can anyone tell me how to burn and get same size as on my computer screen. i also have a program called mgi videoware, but when i create a vcd on that is wants to burn to my hard drive and then to my cd drive, plus the 2 files i was trying to burn where only less than a minute combined and it was taking forever, so i cancelled. please help thx

DaisyLin Guest | hi general369,
Actually, you can set the screen size yourself when converting to mpeg1 with winavi video converter. Have you ever tried that?
