Which codec programs are bogus?

I’ve noticed recently that a lot of avi and other files off torrent sites have an additional info file or a file that takes you to another website and prompts you to download a certain decoder or player to view the movie. Are these safe or what? I just don’t want to end up downloading a virus or something of that nature on my computer. Any suggestions?
