compressing for pda

I am trying to convert parts of some old vhs movies to clips for my pda. I did one at school from a 3dstudiomax rendering so I know it can be done. Where I am now is I have the files as mpegs on disk. I would like to compress them down. The quality does not really matter much and I would like the files to be about 5 megs. Can I convert them to avi’s so Vdub will work? Anyone done this already? Know a good program to do this? I have TMPGenc MPEG Editor. Thanks all......
