It’s really hard to say. Feed the file into diagnostic utilities to check if you’re missing codecs to decode it. Also run chkdsk with surface scan enabled to make sure the surface of the disk is still readable* (that’s a possible source of corruption).
Diagnostic tools: gspot, avicodec, videoinspector. It’s late and I’m a bit too lazy to write actual url’s but you should find them all in the tools download section of the site. http://www.moviecodec.com/tools.html
* If you’re using windows 95/98/Me, then use Scandisk. (start menu, programs, accessories, system tools I think)
On Windows NT, 2000, XP, you can do it two ways. My preferred way is start, program, accessories, command prompt. then type
chkdsk d: /r
It may take a while to scan the whole  partition. At the end be sure to read the report (especially number of KB in bad sectors).
The alternate way is to right click your drive on my computer and choose properties, tools tab, and check now. of course check both boxes before running.
While running chkdsk or scandisk, make sure you’re not using the PC for anything (so that there are no read or write operations to the partition while it’s scanning).
