My C:\ hard drive crashed a while ago, luckily all of my movies/photos/music/games were on my straight\ so I didn’t lose much. However, I’ve re-installed windows media player and winamp and only about half of my stuff works. A lot of my movies say the format is not supported or the parameter is incorrect. They all worked flawlessly with my old hard drive.

Also, a lot of my music files start playing but skip or sound distorted halfway through the song while some others don’t open at all. Could some of the files be corrupted or am I missing some codecs?

Any help would be appreciated.

It’s really hard to say. Feed the file into diagnostic utilities to check if you’re missing codecs to decode it. Also run chkdsk with surface scan enabled to make sure the surface of the disk is still readable* (that’s a possible source of corruption).

Diagnostic tools: gspot, avicodec, videoinspector. It’s late and I’m a bit too lazy to write actual url’s but you should find them all in the tools download section of the site. http://www.moviecodec.com/tools.html

* If you’re using windows 95/98/Me, then use Scandisk. (start menu, programs, accessories, system tools I think)
On Windows NT, 2000, XP, you can do it two ways. My preferred way is start, program, accessories, command prompt. then type
chkdsk d: /r
It may take a while to scan the whole straight partition. At the end be sure to read the report (especially number of KB in bad sectors).
The alternate way is to right click your straight drive on my computer and choose properties, tools tab, and check now. of course check both boxes before running.
While running chkdsk or scandisk, make sure you’re not using the PC for anything (so that there are no read or write operations to the straight partition while it’s scanning).
