I have an HP laptop and was having this problem. Here’s how I solved it. Go into your video card properties and look for an “overlay” setting. I just set my to system default and everything worked again. You can get there by right clicking on your desktop and going to properties-> settings -> advanced etc. Hope this helps.

Kim2 Guest | I have a similar problem. I try running the video in winamp and only the audio works. But then when I try Divx player, nothing works. It tells me to get Directshow decoder. I did that but when I went to install it the program said there was a invalid character and then I was forced to close.

I had the same problem: audio but no video in all players. (it only worked in WinAmp when I unchecked the overlay property).
But now I have it working on all players.... for me the problem was I am using a laptop and have a CRT connected, and use just the CRT. well the laptop was set to dual mode (CRT and the laptop’s LCD, even though the laptop was closed). as a side note, all video always worked on the LCD, but would be blank on the CRT.
when I switch to just CRT, everything started working fine.
if you’re not using a laptop, this still may lead you in the right direction, as I think your problem must have something to do with the video adaptor (assuming you have all the right codec installed).
thats what worked for me, thanks for the tip.

Great solution man. Thank you very much.

Cruise Control Guest | I ask you all to forgive me concerning some of the suggestions that I am about to make, because to some of you, they may seem outlandish or mad, but I have found these tips to work effectively. If all codecs are failing then one should consider that you have a hardware or software problem. Firstly, one should consider that your anti-virus programs such as Norton/Symantec and others are preventing your videos from being played. Disable them and then try again. Sometimes, the problem can be a defect in the video being shown. This could be due to failings in your own software or in the quality of the download. When this happens, the video output is the first thing to fail. This may mean finding another way of downloading your Internet video. You can prove this by playing a movie DVD on your PC. If it plays without problems, then you know that the problem video you wish to play on your computer is defective. This is also true if the video, such as an AVI file, did work before on your computer, but now no longer continues to work, therefore, something on your computer may have corrupted it. Sometimes it is not possible to trace the software problem, so you may have to assume that your Operating System has corrupted it. Why this occurs is not known, but it should be seriously considered by you, that your Operating System, especially with the Windows XP and the lastest Service Packs or on Windows Vista, may take action to prevent music and video pirating.

Nvidiafix Guest | I just installed new drivers for my Nvidia 7600GS and I had sound only in WinDVD and Windows Media Player. To make video show with WinDVD go to the Nvidia Control Panel and go to the “Modify Full-screen video options” and select allow full screen on your monitor. To fix the windows media player problem use the solution above to check the “use high quality mode” checkbox.

I just found a thing in WinAmp that fixed it for playing it in Winamp
Preferences (Ctrl-P) > Options > Video > UNCHeck allow Overlay
Hope this helps others.
The Winamp overlay fix worked great, I also found a fix for Media Player11:
Tools>Options>Performance>VideoAcceleration>Advanced>VideoAcceleration> UNcheck “use overlays”
Hope it helps,

Subways Guest | I know of one solution but am not entirely happy with it. If you completely turn off video acceleration you will get the dual monitor settings working. I now have a problem with my lappy as now it will only work if acceleration is off... Grrrr

Midcomm Guest | One more thanks to Jon Hiler. I had this problem where suddenly my preferred DVD player would not display video. I had been copying CD and playing media files in Windows media player and it’s possible something got messed up but Jon Hilier’s fix in Media player also meant my preferred DVD player displayed video.
