ya well, ok, but try to watch a movie/video and you’ll get stuttering. Try to record video from a capture card and the quality isn’t as good..so, this is NOT a permanent solution.

First uninstall ANY codec packs you have installed. Then install the latest FFDShow-ALPHA from here:

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=53761&package_id=59355

THAT WORKED FOR ME THANK YOU

John Hiller: You’re my daddy! Tried messing around with codecs for ages, and in the end altering the performance options in WMP did it. I was about half an hour away from a complete reinstall!

You need a new HDD. Lack of proper cooling might be the problem, too.

John Hillier is “The Daddy”

I used Gspot to check codec — - codecs all fine.
Rolledback and reinstalled Windows Media Player twice. Checked Microsoft troubleshooting.... system restore points, microsoft troubleshooting advice, even reinstalled my Nortons because shortly after an update i had the video problem figured was worth a try. I finally found this forum with JH’s advice. Bingo Bango i’m back in order with one click. Wished i had seen this a couple of days back. Good work JH smiley

Thanks to John Hillier and others for getting me on to this as that definitely fixes the problem in WinMediaPlayer 10(also applies to WinMediaPlayer 8 and 9, no need to upgrade to ver 10). Like some of the other users, we wanted to use WinDVD and other apps to play DVDs (need to play video from a lecturer’s laptop onto a classroom overhead projector). The other mentioned solution that works was to select only the CRT as the output of the laptop. However, with an nVidia card there’s an even BETTER solution that saves you from having to fiddle with the output source OR adjusting the properties of individual DVD apps (WinAmp,WMP, etc.) AND lets you still use the dual output so you can see it on the laptop as well. Here it is:
* Open the nView Desktop Manager (either an icon in System Tray or right-click desktop/Properties/Settings tab/Advanced tab/(nVidiaVideoModelName)tab/(nVidiaVideoModelName) button and then a side window opens.
* Expand it to see all options if needed
* Click on Overlay Controls
* The “Full Screen Device” will probably be set on “Disable” (the default)
* Change this to “Primary Display” (makes laptop video fullscreen and secondary output resizable, or choose “Secondary Display” for vice versa)
* The video should now play on both screens using WinDVD, WMP, etc. (no need to make the changes in WMP using this as the nView overlay settings will totally override all those settings).

Hope this helps!!
Russ

Forgot to mention this but my above fix also lets you use WinDVD to play DVD on both screens. Should allow any software to now play on both screens.

Cheers,
Russ

I never thought I’d find a solution to this! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I opened nVidia nView Desktop Manager > Zoom [tab] > Mirroring control, I changed in the pulldown menu from full display > from “deactivate” to “primary display device” and now all of my players work!

This fixed the 'sound but no video' problem in Windows Media Player for me:

1. Start Windows Media Player 10;
2. If not maximised, maximise Windows Media Player;
3. On the menu bar, choose TOOLS then OPTIONS;
4. Select the PERFORMANCE tab;
5. Move the 'video acceleration' setting off 'Full'
6. Click on the OK button;
7. Close Windows Media Player;

(Info: WinXP Prof SP2, Windows Media Player 10, AMD XP3200, 512MB RAM)

I was having this problem with a T.V. card. Turning off the T.V. display fixed it.

Thanks,

SLo007,

MP 10 Solution:

Start software>click Tools>click Options>click Performance Tab>click Advanced (under “video acceleration”wink>click “use high quality mode” (under Video Acceleration area); this will uncheck “Use overlays”.

This worked for my WMP playback....I had sound but no video after downloading video files from the internet...

Just a general note. For windows to be able to display overlay,there is a built inlimitation. Win can only runoverlay on one mon at a time. Also Acceleration islimnited to the Primary display. If you mange to get overlay to run on two monitors, it is doubtful whether you will get DXVA as well. Win can only Accel. one mon at a time. Nothjing to do with the vid card, this is a win Limitation. If the overlay is forced, the secondary mon may stutter on displaying a file.

Lastly. I DID manage to hack the drivers for ATI 9800 pro. I do have accel and overlay functional on both monitors. But it was hell.
Unfortunately I did this before I was made aware of windows limits. And for the Life of me I can’t figure it out a second time!! (Had a system crash from a trojan, and reinstalled, now I lost the DXVA on the secondary,plus no overlay.
Knowing that it IS possible, perhaps someone else will have the timeto reproduce my results.
Will chat about it, if anyone is interested. I would love to get it running again.

luck.

Hey guys

I solved my problem by doing what Amanda said... my screen resolution was 800x600, and I tried using 1024x768... whoa it worked!

It still have some nasty effects (like the movies opening outside its window), but I can watch them anyway!

Thanks all!

Jon Hiler, that was great. Now I can use my media player. Only one problem, I still cannot view video with nero. Any suggestions there.
