possible codec problem

I am having problems with DVD Santa. I am trying to convert an AVI file i have to DVD, but the program keeps throwing me out. All i get is the standard M$ error message popup and did i want to report this to Microsoft.... if i answer either yes or no the program closes. I already have Nero 6 and tried that with the same result. What i need to know is what are the possible causes? this is really starting to frustrate me.
