I wanted to record the election coverage this year for posterity, so I started recording from about 11 AM Tuesday till Wednesday night. I ended up with an mpeg-1 file of about 61 GB (65.3 Gicool (I wanted to make sure I’d have good quality, so I didn’t do any in-line encoding). I was going to convert this into Xvid with Virtualdub, but it hung and never actually fully loaded it. I then tried several mpeg splitters, none of which worked (one did seem to work for a bit, but it split the first half of the first section, but then exited with an error).

So, to make a long story short, does anyone know of a good tool to either convert or split a 61 GB mpeg file? If it would help, I could go ahead and upgrade my RAM to 768 (currently 384). Thanks a lot for your help!

Use the simple mpeg tools in tmpgenc. Go to file, simple mpeg tools, then pick the merge & cut tab.

Thanks for the reply, but tmpgenc crashed on me as well. I found HJ-Split (www.freebyte.com/hjsplit), which did the job well (and very speedy to boot). So now it’s all good smiley.
