If you purchased or copied movie files and they are protected, you should to convert them. I found Daniusoft WMA MP3 Converter could convert many DRM WMA/WMV files.

If i wanted to convert a file into a format accepted by most DVD players, what would be the best format to convert to and what is a good convertor for this?

You may convert videos to VOB(DVD file) which fits for DVD players.
Only use Daniusoft Video Converter to convert any videos to DVD and other popular video formats as you want.
Also it let you crop/ trim/ effect video as you want.
