How can I get the subtitles to appear?

I have a .AVI file which plays fine, using either VLC media player or MS Media Player. But it’s in French! I also have a .SRT file, which contains the English subtitles. There is also a .SUB file present. How can I get the subtitles to appear?

Please bear in mind that I know none of the technical details about digital media, beyond what I said here. My knowledge is at the level of double-clicking the file name and then watching the video.
