Is there a better alternative to WinAvi ?

I have trouble converting some (not all) AVI movies to DVD format using WinAVI 5.8. I use “Any to DVD”, set everything up and then start converting. However, when the progress comes to a certain percentage (some at 5%, some at 85%) the “Frame rate” goes down to zero speed and there it stays ! One example: It takes 10 minutes to reach 68% and after 15 !!! hours !!! I stopped it because it was still at 68% !!!!. The AVI is 410 Meg in size and 40 minutes in duration
