I know you probably get flooded with 'need elp' topics in this forum but I can assure I have tried to research and impliment a solution on my own before asking here.

While attempting to watch an avi file in DVX player, I see a message saying 'This file contains a track in an unknown format (code”"wink format. You made need to install a DirectShow decoder for this video format in order to play this file.

Wuh?

Also, is it smart to intall several codec packs to cover all situations? Or, do they all pile up and cause problems? Or, does it not matter? Can you install away?

First you might want to try a new media player. DivX Player is arguably one of the best for a freeware program as it comes loaded with codecs.

This is from an old post of mine in thread 9524
“My recommendation is staying away from codec packs; instead, use diagnostic tools to find out what codec you need and install them on an as-needed basis. Lots more work, but less likelyhood of your pc going belly up ([...] - and when you have a codec pack with 100+ codecs that won’t uninstall properly, good luck finding out which one is the culprit)
[...]
Use gspot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot) or avicodec (http://avicodec.duby.info)" [for diagnosis]

It’s a lot more work, but it’s safer. I know codec packs have gotten better over time, and now you have system restore, but you’re still taking a chance. If you must install any kind of codec pack, try sticking to open-source items like ffdshow-tryout.
