MeyshaStar Guest | Hi all,
I downloaded an movie (.avi) and tried to play it. Not surprisingly, it didn’t work, so I went on a hunt on the net for codecs and other message board ideas. End result,,, Still doesn’t work.
I was starting to think the file was corrupt, but then I downloaded VLC player and the sound is all jittery and cutting in and out, but still no video. So that makes me think the file isn’t corrupt at all, i just need to find the right codec.
Here’s what I’ve tried,
Windows Media Player (latest after SP2)
Quicktime
DivX
VLC
K-Lite Codec Pack
Also ran the file through GSPOT and VideoInspector but neither recognised the file.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers! | |

anonymous Guest | Run the file once more through avicodec, videoinspector, and gspot. Tell us what the exact error message is. I was originally thinking it may be an alternate container, such as ogm or matroska, and not an avi, but videotoolbox should be able to read matroska, and gspot and avicodec should be able to read ogm. I’m also thinking it could be an mpeg (-1 or -2), but in a cd image, such as vcd or svcd in a .bin/.cue. VideoLan can read those, but most other players can’t.

MeyshaStar Guest | OK, in avicodec:
No video Codec found
File : 701 MB (701 M , duration: 0:00:00, type: DSH, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 28 %
Audio : 701 MB, 80 Kbps, 22050 Hz, 2 channels, 0x50 = Mpeg-1 audio Layer 1, Supported
In VideoInspector: It doesn’t come up with anything at all. (I did check with other movies, and they show up all the relevant info, so it’s not a dud copy of VI)
Same thing happens in gspot. Only comes up with:
Container
Mime Type: Unknown
File Type: Unknown
Hope that helps. | |

anonymous Guest | 701 MB is almost a magical number there. Suggests to me a cd image. The fact the audio can be partially read and is identified as mpeg audio suggests vcd or svcd. I’m surprised videolan won’t play the video though.
I guess the question is what kind of a cd image is it? (.iso, .cue/.bin, .nrg, .mdf/.mds, .img, .dat, .cif, or some other). I’d give isobuster a try, see if it can identify and/or extract the contents of the cd image. If you can find out what cd image type it is, you can find an appropriate burner program that supports the format and burn it on a cd.

MeyshaStar Guest | I’ve got no idea how or what IsoBuster does but I think I winged my way through it all.
I extracted all the data RAW but made it convert it to User data. Then I ended up with a .tao file. In the help file for Isobuster it said just to change the extension to .iso and then burn it to a cd. So that’s what I did.
But i just burnt it using the Windows XP interal burning software, so now when i try to open it, it’s still an .iso file and won’t play (stll)
Have I done the right thing? or am I completely on the wrong track. I don’t understand anything of what i’ve just done, so i’m walking in the dark. But boy is it fun!
Cheers! | |

anonymous Guest | isobuster can read and extract the content of a wide range of cd image formats. I was hoping that by running it you’d be able to identify the cd image format (if the file is one). Apparently isobuster couldn’t identify it if it asked to read it in raw format.
the fact that windows xp burned the file as a data cd with an iso file in it instead of burning the cd image also suggests something didn’t go right in the conversion to .tao
I’m stumped. The only thing you have go on is the mpeg-1 audio in the stream. I keep thinking it’s some kind of mpeg file. I’d just try a bunch of different mpeg players: videolan, media player classic, any dvd player (powerdvd, windvd), elecard, crystal player, and anything else you can google.

MeyshaStar Guest | Well no luck yet, but thanks for all your help.
I certainly know a lot more about how these files work now!
Thanks a million! | |

despair Guest | Hi Anonymous,
You seem to really know alot abt these stuff.
I need your help, too.
I have the exact same problem as meyshastar, did the exact same thing (download isobuster etc)and ended up with a .tao file (when I extract user data) & a .bin file( when I extract raw). So where do I go from here? I tried burning the .bin file using my CDRW but doesn’t work.
Is there any specific CDRW software I shd use eg. nero, creator? Those kind that gives the option of converting file to VCD/DVD etc? because mine doesn’t have this option.

anonymous Guest | The only reason I suggested the use of isobuster was I suspected the file was a cd image file (although which specific format, I couldn’t tell). The fact ISOBuster didn’t recognize it as any particular format suggests it may not have been a cd image. The only thing I had to go on in MeyshaStar’s file is the mpeg audio that skips without playing any video. That’s why I kept thinking it was a vcd or svcd (which when they’re in cue/bin format should be readable by videolan)

MeyshaStar Guest | hmmm still no luck.
Could it have come from a Mac? and that’s why there’s problems playing it on my PC?
Really searching in the dark now.

asiram Guest | Hi there! Got the exact same problem and tried with the various soft anonymous suggested but still no luck.
I`m too in the dark here, but like Meyshastar the only reason i haven`t give up yet is because it`s fun to try solving this problem... It`s like solving a riddle :-)
Good luck!
