Video won't play!

I’ve downloaded a movie, but DivX player wont play it at all and Windows Media Player and Real Player only play the audio! It’s very frustrating. It’s a .mpeg file. Before downloading a codec pack or two, none of my players played any of the file, at least now I have the audio - but does anyone know how to get the video to work too?

The most effective way to diagnose this would be to feed the file into one or more of the diagnostic tools on this page

(I recommend using avicodec or videoinspector first, as opposed to gspot, since they can tell the difference between mpeg-1 and mpeg-2)
You say the extension is mpeg, so it could be mpeg-2 as opposed to mpeg-1, but just use one of the diagnostic programs to make sure, as extensions on file sharing programs tend to get renamed a lot.
