XP Windows Explorer Avi Problem

I really don’t think you should mess with registry settings unless you really know what you are doing. It is a movie or a clip so the problem lies in the codecs. The DivX521XP2K.exe worked perfectly with no registry fixes. BUt its great to see all the ideas that peeps come up with when a problem like this arises. I think I had this problem once before, but never new exactly what codec fixed it.

U gyus are AWESOME. i looked everywhere for this very irritating problem. The explorer would just hang up when viewing a directory with avi file.
But not any more!!!!!!!!

Wow, finally, after grand searches on google Dr. Watson Postmortem .... yahda yahda yahda, as well as Data Corruption prevention.... two different virus scans, Spybot, Adware,Highjackthis.... Safe mode troubleshooting... had this computer running on the bare minimum number of critical programs and that is all, and it still would would crash when trying to load an avi.

That was when I realized that I either had a corrupted file or a some thing missing....I had noticed that explorer always baled out during the assessing of the duration of the AVI files.

I also noticed that the explorer blank out and disappear to fade back in. It literally returns to the most recently saved desktop. I am not sure how important this is...but it is basically like returning to the last saved “Personal Settings” default.

I used the DivX521XP2K.exe fix, seems to be working well now.

As far as the Regedit vs. the DivX fix... Whatever floats your boat. I like the DivX bundle, had it already, but an earlier version.

Once a person gets aquainted with regedit, it is not hard to work with. It is a quite large, and takes a bit of time to work with... always back it up before changing anything. And...if you are not sure...well... depends on experimental you are. I have learned a great deal by backing myself into a corner. My advice is...if you are not sure... DONT CHANGE IT.

The Registry is a lot more organized and systemitized than the good ole .INI files we used to have to work with.

Anyways do whats most expedient for you.

can anyone help me? ive been reading thru this thread but havent found a solution to my problem. i tried playing one of my avi. movies today with MPC, but few seconds later it says it has encountered a problem and needs to close. same thing happens with same folder when i tried opening it in BSplayer, winamp, and wmp. but for some reason, they work with vlc player perfectly fine, and winamp still plays music! i also tried regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll. anyone?

heres my prob, when i play an AVI sometimes the sound and video play at slightly different speeds... can i fix this or is it plain corrupted?

and i should have mentioned that when i try to burn the file to a dvd its the same problem. that what i would like to fix if anyone can help?

I believe the problem would be in your codecs. Try to uninstall any codecs you have installed and download a codec pack like xp codec pack from http://www.free-codecs.com/download/XP_Codec_Pack.htm . That should solve your problem, however; if it does not, sometimes when you download a video file the audio and video are off a bit. The only thing you can do then it try to convert the file to another format with software that lets you realign the audio and video. Ulead Video Studio is a great program for such tasks. Good luck.

help, i have ultra DVD creator and try to convert my avi movie to dvd so i can watch it on my dvd. but every time when i run the converter i always get “ultra video to Dvd Converter has encountered a problem and needs to close.
how to resolve this problem?

The “http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm” file worked for me too. I had the same problem for a few months now & couldn’t solve it. Now it’s back to normal.

when I want to play any movie in any program,windows explorer encounters an error and i need to close it!the problem started when I got some virus but i errased it and problem stayed!please someone help me!!!!
