Beastlee Guest | Sounds to me like that girl I know simply needs some updated codecs. I would try to dounload the newest version of divx or you may want to try to use Gspot http://www.headbands.com/gspot/download.html to identify the correct codec and update it or them as needed. Good luck!

Ian Guest | Another option, instead of using regedit to mess with the dll’s to turn off the preview thumbnail, is to just turn it off in XP. The option is there, always has been.
Go to Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Adjust Visual Effects. Scroll to the bottom and untick Use common tasks in folders. It will get rid of the pointless common tasks border to the side and give you a much more functional folder layout. Most of the options there (delete, move to, copy to, etc) can be simply added to the Tool Bar. Folders will run much smoother and quicker.
Once done you will find that the Control Panel switches to the old style and Performance and Maintenance is no longer there. If you find you don’t like folders without the common tasks option, and have closed down the Adjust Visual Effects setting box, to turn Use common tasks in folders back on go to Control Panel, System, Advanced and Performance.

666 Guest | Unfortunately disabling the task pane is a system wide setting. You can’t switch it off for individual folders.
The task pane may be annoying for video files, but it can be useful for other folders. I like the taskpane preview for image files. Thumbnail-instead-of-details display in folders with pictures is not an acceptable alternative because it slows down opening a folder and the thumbnails are too small. The 'other places' panel (which I customized, I use it frequently to drag and drop files) can also not be moved to the toolbar.

Snadge Guest | I know what the problem is, codec clash, too many codecs arguing with each other results in encoding time-out and the error message and no preview in window / folder....
I used the command prompt to temp disable, after that i still had an issue with codecs clashing when trying to burn AVI to DVD etc.(i removed FFDShow and left on DivX / XviD) and that worked...
So i thought i would return the preview command to its previous state and it works fine..so thats what caused it...
REMOVE MULTIPLE CODECS PACKAGES JUST GET 1 BIG CODEC PACKAGE TO AVOID CONFLICTS....LIKE NIMO CODEC PACKAGE
its the best available, take a look whats on it....

hklmz Guest | I have the same problem, but only with mpeg2 files.
before I play a mpeg2 file, explorer.exe hits directly to 100% load even in non-thumbnail view..
avi files are ok.
I have tried with
4) To remove media preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
=no problems occur with mpeg2 files,
but then I cannnot get thumbnail-view for avi files.
Is there a program/code to shutdown thumbnail-view//remove media preview for only mpeg2 files???

Snadge Guest | Try removing All your codecs and install DivX & Xvid then turn the thumbnail preview back on and you will find that all is normal, the reason it does that is because its trying to encode with the wtrong codec to show the preview , I have DivX and Xvid codecs installed and it sorted my problem out, i switched the thumbnail back on and it works fine, DivX converts ALL codecs ive come across and i burn movies for a living...

Entree Rep: 0 Joined: 12 Feb 2006 Posts: 2 OFFLINE | Nobody seem to have an answer for windows 2000. Everytime i try to add and avi to nero for a burn, the pc hangs. Divx can play the files fine. Run the regsrv32 /u shmedia.dll command comes up with file not found.

Beastlee Guest | Wiz, if you want to try the regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll option, download ShellExView from here http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html and under the type look for something that deals with thumbnails or search for avi and disable them all. It does the same thing as the regsrv23 /u command only with a more userfriendly interface. That will do it for that option. good luck.

Imre Guest | Hi I have this stupid Most mortem Watson error and only when placing cursor or single clicking on an avi , but it seems to be only avi files , not all avi files.
Possibly xvid and not divx ?
Anyways, i will try regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
and see what hapens.
I do not every recall having this problem before and i used to have Win XP pro with SP2 installed always!.
Anyways, weird.

davidlaska Guest | By reading this forum I found out that explorer was not a problem. This freeze began when I rolled back to Divx 5.x from 6.x. so I trashed shemo.ddl (spelled wrong here by me)
Bottom line, this forum was from a google search which you guys solved my problem. Far better than a re install do to ignorance.

The Green Guest | Hi have a problem with avi files. Everytime i open up one it crashes the movie player and then explorer. I have tried it on all formats such as Windows media player, real player etc and it crashes on all of them except DivX. Im trying to burn these avi files to dvd so is there something i can do to stop this from crashing?

Bedazzler Guest | I had the same problem then realised it was not all AVI’s only Xvid encoded ones. I downloaded the codec at http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/ and have had no problems since. I did not do any of the reg changes as per above.
