my prob was that avi files got stuck in the recycle bin as df*.avis and could not be accessed and avi files in normal folders couldn’t be accessed by applications not supporting smth. like “open even when in use” because they were in use by explorer
all other solutions i found were highly unsatisfactory even if they worked like killing explorer via tskmgr or using cmd
those solutions had to be repeated for every single occasion the problem occured and after restarting explorer you had icons missing eventhough the corespinding apps were running etc... annoyances over annoyances!
now finally after hours of research i found this great thread and regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll did the trick and i don’t wan’t tell you what mindbending smt, even ridiculous things i tried to fix that even wrotr a script that sent all avis i deleted not to the recycle bin but another folder to be renamed and so on... iwas very close to reinstall xp which probably would’t have fixed it at all!
but why is this regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll such a secret? since those problems are encountered by quite a lot of people judging from threads found when searching on google or others and most of those threads stand unanswered or stupid workarounds are described!

just so other users can be helped:
i had some avi codec that was working perfectly. i installed intervideo windvd to play dvd’s, then when i tried to open avi files, the file would play, but explorer would crap out, would have to alt ctrl delete close the folder. uninstalled intervideo, still no good. uninstalled the avi codec, found this thread, googled and installed “DivX521XP2K.exe” all good =)

Debi Guest | This has been an interesting thread. It hasn’t solved my problem, though. I have hundreds of folders with .avi files, and in the past couple of months Windows Explorer hangs up as it attempts to make a thumbnail of the .avi files.
I tried regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
and it works fine for what it does, but I *want* to have thumbnail previews of my .avi files.
I installed XviD. Nothing changed.
I installed DviX 6.0. In one folder with three .avi files (which all play fine in various media players), the first one now has a thumbnail view, but Windows Explorer dies when it tries to create a thumbnail of the second movie. So it looked like a fix at first, but not quite.
Then I read that DivX 6.0 has some bugs and I should go back to DivX 5.2.1. So I installed it. Nothing changed.
This is really frustrating. Any other ideas are welcome.

Frank Guest | Had a very similar problem.....
If you have any XviD codec installed the remove it (via add/remove) and then reinstall the latest version (XviD-1.0.3-20122004.exe).
This cured all the explorer problems for me.

Beastlee Guest | Debi, you might want to give 3ivx a try. Its a great codec! Just uninstall your xvid and divx codec via the add/remove programs in control panel, then restart, finally install 3ivx from here

and you should be set. It will handel your divx and xvid files as well. Let us know how it worked.

snadge Guest | I have encountered ANOTHER problem with the .AVI files... I have been using winAVI to encode to DVD and at the same time as the problem with the AVI preview in explorer happened-> everytime i try to use any software to encode to dvd i get “ACCESS VOILATION ERROR - COULD NOT READ FROM 00000000X0 AT MEMORY LOCATION 00000000X0” as soon as press start the two problems happened at the same time so they must be related...the CMD entry sorted out the explorer problem but i still cant encode any avi files to DVD...
CAN ANY1 PLEASE HELP...I have tried loads of software and they all do the same and winAVI used to work fine till this happened AND the DIV-X 6 upgrade didnt fix it either

Beastlee Guest | snadge, I belive that winavi is trying to access memory that either is used by another program or does not exist. This is a tough problem. I have heard of people taking out thier RAM cards and moving them to another slot to fix the problem. You may want to try that. I have the same problem also with my PC Remote Control at windows shutdown and despite many attempts to fix it, I have been unsuccessful. Short of reinstalling Windows and not installing the programs that caused the error, I cannot find a fix for this one. Good luck and if you find a fix, please post it, thanks.

snadge Guest | I sorted the problem BeastLee, it was too many codec packages installed so they were conflicting with each other... i uninstalled FF-Show codec package and it was ok, reverted back to DivX package now all works fine...
Maybe you have software conflict with remote control software, perhaps using a driver that is shared with another program and the other app wont allow access..?!?
ANYWAY hope you get it sorted out....

I was reluctant to mess around with registry keys, so I downloaded the latest DivX codec (someone suggested DivX521XP2K.exe) and the problem is not completely solved! And I still retain the video thumbnails and previews. I would recommend people try installing of new DivX codec first, for it allows people to keep their thumbnails and previews.

666 Guest | An unpleasant side effect of unregistring shmedia.dll is that it removes useful information like duration, bitrate, title, artist etc. for audio and video files when you open the properties tab or switch on details view in eplorer.
To get the best of both worlds - stop explorer from trying to extract thumbnails from videos while keeping the useful details, delete HKCR\CLSID\{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590} from your registry or switch off Video Thumbnail Extractor with a program like http://www.snapfiles.com/get/shellexview.html .

i had a similar problem in addition to that nero and other burning softwares would crash when i tried to burn avi files.
i updated dvx to 6.1 and have ni problem now.

I have a really weird problem that I haven’t seen mentioned here and I need to get fixed in the next day or I’m toast... If anyone can help, please reply ASAP!!!
PROBLEM:
My computer refuses to play CERTAIN avi files, mainly newer ones but it will still play older ones. I know the files are not corrupt, because they will play on any other computer except this one, and I can’t figure out why. So all I know is that THIS computer only refuses to play THESE files only. Any other combination works.
PLEASE HELP BY TOMORROW!!! (THURSDAY)
