If you want to fix the problem without disabling the thumbnails view or anything else. Check your codecs by going to your control panel, then sounds and audio devices, next click the hardware tab and select video codecs and properties. Check through them one by one. This is where your problem lies most likely. If you have Divx 6.0, you may want to remove it and use Divx 5.2.1, is seems there is a bug or conflict with version 6.0. I have found that Pinnacle drivers crash explorer also, particularly PICAudio MJPEG Codec, you cannot remove this through the sound and audio window however you can disable it throught the the settings of this codec. This should work on all versions of windows. I hope this helped someone. I had the same problem and reinstalled windows and the problem was back again after I installed Divx 6.0. You can read more posts about Divx at http://www.divx.com . Good luck and I hope this helped someone as it has for me.

steve_bcn Guest | Awesome! I uninstalled DivX 6, installed DivX 5.2.1 and hey presto WE works fine with “web content” enabled. I can enjoy mp3s + mpegs again.
Thanks Beastlee.

many thanks!
ps. i tried this brilliant idea - http://forum.pcstats.com/showthread.php?t=23860. i deleted the registry key as mentioned. anyone know if i can live with it like this? or do i need to recreate it? if so, i’d need a quick tutorial on how to revive the thing (values, etc). thanks

Beastlee Guest | I would say that if you are not having any problems with anything pertaining to video files, I would not worry about it. If you are having problems, post with the info.

doctorno Guest | I also encounter a similar problem of opening up a avi file and my window explorer automatical disappear or freezes. Although I tried the 2 methods below, I have no luck...
Method#1
“1) Open a command window (Start->Run, type in 'cmd' hit enter)
2) To remove image preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
3) To readd image preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
4) To remove media preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
5) To readd media preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 shmedia.dll "
Method#2
Run regedit and find the following key :- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTSystemFileAssociations.avishellexPropertyHandler Delete the “Default” value then close. You should now be able to see .avi previews almost instantly but without the crashes ============== Hope it helps you too"

J.B. Brown Guest | A heartfelt thanks for this tip. I had been really frustrated by this problem (not to mention I use Linux primarily and don’t have such a problem), and this thread made it simple to fix.

Beastlee Guest | I have found that in some cases, deleting the registry keys is the only way to fix this problem. There are 3 different keys that I have found that are causing this problem. They are conflicting with the defualt AVI, MPG, and WMV handlers and actually have created 2nd default handlers.
The keys are;
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.avi\ShellEx\{FFB699E0-306A-11d3-8BD1-00104B6F7516}]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mpg\ShellEx\{FFB699E0-306A-11d3-8BD1-00104B6F7516}]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.wmv\ShellEx\{FFB699E0-306A-11d3-8BD1-00104B6F7516}]
If you are still having problems, try deleting these after you have backed up your registry.

UK_Guest Guest | Thank you so much for your advice, guys! I have just bought a new Fuji camera (which uses AVi video, not MPEG like my previous camera) and have installed and uninstalled the software which came with it several times. I was thinking it was the Fujifilm Finepix viewer responsible for causing Windows Explorer to keep crashing. A few minutes ago I deleted every last trace of the Fuji software from my program files, the registry etc and sent the offending AVI files to the Recycle Bin. No luck! Explorer crashed when I hovered my mouse over one of the deleted files!
I decided to find out about this problem and found out about your site on Google. Simply running a Command Prompt and regsvr32/u shmedia.dll has solved the problem!
Thanks again!

Johny Innuendo Guest | Hi guys
I have bit of the problem last few days. I tried every method to delete one AVI file, which is corrupt, from my removable hard disc. I found on internet few tricks which you do in register with deleting certain files but it didn’t work. Than I download few programs specialized for removing corrupt files but they also didn’t work. My last try was to do it in safe mode but result is the same. I can’t move it, delete it and rename it. Its like a ghost on my hard disc. Please help somebody...
