My problem was that on my desktop computer, the avi files would not display as thumbnails even though thumbnail was the selected view type. Running the regsvr32 shmedia.dll fixed the unexplainable problem.

Every time you enter a directory with *.AVIs it started to read duration and dimensions, which hanged the PC, also the deleting problem, this command solved me all these

GMunkie Guest | Dloaded and installed Divx as above and it tottally sorted my problems out.
I was putting new avi files into a dload directory but it would freeze when i went to reopen the directory and gave a dr watson post mortem debug error crashing out explorer. Tried allsorts to fix. Installed DivX latest and no problem.. thanx.

DUH Guest | Ok, I tried most of the solutions but wondered why this was a problem and I didn’t like editing Registry Keys without a good reason. Since most of what I read seemed to be related to Divx, I downloaded GSpot to check my Codecs. Sure enough I had an “old” DivX codec installed at
VFW Driver File C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\DLLShared\Roxio_DivX.dll
that was installed with my Roxio EMC package. I remembered the problem first occured after I was trying to render a test “AVI” video file and stopped it before it was finished. That seemed to have done something with the Roxio_DivX.dll file or its reference in the registry.
What seems to have fixed it is the downloading of the newer 5.2.1 DivX codec with its player, rename the other “Roxio_DivX.dll” DivX codec temporarily, open a folder with AVI files, and rename the file back to Roxio_DivX.dll.

Boyd Guest | i go to right click on any file..now and it freezes and takes me right back to the beginning again....i used..regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
and that worked great for avi files, now i go to right click to get the options either to move the file or delete the file and ....my computer goes right to 100% usage..and freezes..any suggestions...thanks if anyone can help me, Boyd

my explorer crashed every time i opened a folder full of pics and movies downloads(avis and mpegs).
now its working fine and i didn´t had to fool around with the regedit.

regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
It was my divx files causing the problems. Even if I didn’t have trouble I would use this command. Folders load far quicker than before.

Thanks a lot guys, I was getting so pissed off with XP doing this to me ... I even went so far as to do a rollback of SP2 (which corrupted a whole hard drive’s file system!!).
The registry entries worked great!
