Nobody seem to have an answer for windows 2000. Everytime i try to add and avi to nero for a burn, the pc hangs. Divx can play the files fine. Run the regsrv32 /u shmedia.dll command comes up with file not found.
????
wtf would you say something like that, for, you burn movies for a living, IDIOT.

sinner Guest | uninstall all codec packs, download klite codec pack full, reboot and install that pack, with mpc, you won’t have any issues, unless you have other system issues going on. what ive used for years and i never encounter errors of any kind.

Try removing All your codecs and install DivX & Xvid then turn the thumbnail preview back on and you will find that all is normal, the reason it does that is because its trying to encode with the wtrong codec to show the preview , I have DivX and Xvid codecs installed and it sorted my problem out, i switched the thumbnail back on and it works fine, DivX converts ALL codecs ive come across and i burn movies for a living...
meant that idiot, sry wiz.

Telgar Guest | Just as an update for future refrence, stop shuting down shmedia.dll and thinking its golden, people actually like to see thumbnails.
The error report states on my computer that xvid.dll was the culprit. yes shmedia.dll solves the problem, but uninstalling the xvid codec should solve the problem without touching shmedia.dll. it worked on my computer, i hope it works on others too. its really stupid to call it quits with just turning off a windows feature that is not causing the problem .
*note* divx has also been known to cause this problem with some people. try uninstalling this and reinstalling a different version of divx. same for xvid, another version of it should work fine for you.

NotSoLucky Guest | Fixed worked great,
now can you help me with stage 2?
AVIs crash every program I try to open them with.
Any suggestions?
I tried updating my codecs, but by now, this computer
with 5 years of crap on it probably has 500 of the same codec to do the same thing.

SOUNDSTORM X Guest | I tried the REGSVR32 /U SHMEDIA.DLL AND IT WORKED FINE YESTER DAY FOR ONE VIDEO IN MY PROJECT BUT THE NEXT DAY I TRRIED ANOTHER VIDEO, DID IT THE SAME WAY AND NOW BACK TO SQUARE 1 VIRTUALDUB 1.7.1 AND 1.6.4 SAY THAT TOWARDS THE END OF THE AVI THAT SOMETHING LOCKED A PORTION OF THE FILE AND THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING WITH MOST OF MY AVI FILES AND ALMOST EVERY VIDEO CLIP I TRY TO ENCODE OR DECOMPRESS. IT HAS COST ME LOTS OF HOURS OF WAISTED TIME AND IM FRUSTRADED BECAUSE IM NOT SURE IF IM GOING TO GET THIS ISSUE RESOVED AND WITH HAVE TO SACRIFICE QUALITY ON MY PROJECT AND POSSIBLE HAVE TO LEARN OTHER METHODS TO GET AROUND THIS WHICH I DONT REALLY HAVE TIME TO DO THIS YEAR.

I had the same experience with XP explorer crashing and not responding after opening a folder that contained avi files.
I had to use task manager to close folder.
I downloaded DivX521XP2K.exe and it solved the problem without having to regedit.
Many thanks for your advice.
you are a son of a B
