Dross Guest | Just as an update, I had the problem of Explorer crashing whenever it tried to load avi thumbnails. I was using DivX codec 6.6. I uninstalled this and installed version 5.2.1 and this solved the problem.

The problem is with a bug in the EXPLORER.EXE.
Any attempt to delete a corrupt .AVI file will trigger 100% CPU usage. I got this problem from a partially downloaded .AVI which I could not finish downloading so I wanted to delete it and off it went to 100% CPU usage.
If you just want to delete an undeletable avi file, do the following: Rightclick the file and select “Cut”. Go to the Recycle Bin and “Paste”. Now empty the Recycle Bin.
Cool this worked for me stp, so to delete multiple avi files that are playing hard to get using keyboard short cuts, after you’ve burned the avi’s to disc for example; Select the multiple files, hit [control + X] the keyboard shortcut for cut, then go to the recycle bin paste them there, empty the recycle bin. Return to you downloaded avi’s folder, and presto those files went bye-bye!
Not sure why you would want to go to the hassles of any of the other fixes mentioned, this is a simple method.

Bermuden Guest | I found this forum while searching for a solution to explorer crashing when doing a video preview (Thumbnail view mode). I think this fix will work, but I would like to find a way to keep viewing thumbnails.
Qlippoth, I have found that if I place the offending files in a folder (two levels deep if viewed as thumbnails so windows won’t preview it) I can drag the folder into the playlist of most media players without crashing.
I have also found that you can move or delete a file after explorer crashes (before you click send/don’t send of the crash notification box. It will hard crash if it tries to preview the file again however.
If anyone knows how to fix this without losing the previews, I would appreciate the advice.

Remove image and/or media preview in Explorer
Posted 9/21/2003 by TweakXP Member
Windows XP Explorer has a 'feature' to provide a preview in the Details box on the left of the file you have selected, if it’s supported. Image files, HTML pages, video clips, MP3s, etc are all previewed (even with the folder view open).
If you have a large movie clip and it either is corrupt (ie. no index from a partial download) or it uses an unsupported codec, then Explorer tries to load the whole file. This can slow your computer a lot and prevent deleting/renaming/moving/etc the file until it’s finished.
Simply do the following steps:
1) Open a command window (Start->Run, type in 'cmd' hit enter)
2) To remove image preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
3) To readd image preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
4) To remove media preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
5) To readd media preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 shmedia.dll
Simple.

PatrickM Guest | I was having the same problem with explorer crashing every time it tried to certain AVI thumbnails. The problem turned out to be a bad xvid codec I recently downloaded (because I thought it was the most recent official one). I went to the official xvid website, installed their codec and the problem was gone in an instant.

Omair Guest | i have a different scenario all over. i have like plenty of “Heroes” episodes downloaded. Now i see that the avi preview of the thumbnails created by explorer are all black because thats how the show begins, with a black screen. could it be possible to change the time duration of thumbnail from 2 sec to 50 seconds ahead or 2 minutes just once.
thanks.

richieb Guest | hi all,
i had problem with DEP telling me i wasnt allowed to do sh1t, win explorer telling me to get stuffed - i thought these were to do with avi’s and divx because it occurred whenever i tried opening them. sometimes it would work with some movies but not all.
first stop was a wee red herring - tried to kill all malware and spybot stuff. i was a little lucky finding some nasties that had to go but i was still having these issues.
i was fortunate to stumble across this thread — thanks to every person who wrote something here, even if i didnt read your post - big ups still. i was able to kill the problem (and streamline things a little nicer) by killing DEP, doing the /u shmedia-thingy and rehashing the divx codecs on the system.
when i rehashed the divx codecs....i had K-lite mega codec pack installed prior, i uninstalled it and did a fresh of the install of the newest klites mega pack and... lo and behold, when reinstalling it came across some registry entries that were either corrupted or simply just the wrong value. it corrected these and when install was done..... IT WORKED. no more creashes from file manager.... erm, win explorer (showing my age there )
again, cheers to all the prior posts.
i know im probably re-iterating what has been said before however some fixes dont work but when used with a combo of fixes you find how fickle these racks of silicon are.... dont we luv em?
i dont use my system for much and when it dont work i want to wizz out my eyeballs.
fanks fanks and more fanks guys n gals

even easier - make two batch files
shmediaoff.bat that has this line in it:
REGSVR32 /U SHMEDIA.DLL
and then shmediaon.bat (to turn preview for files that works) back on:
REGSVR32 SHMEDIA.DLL
Wow, I encountered this same problem with openning folders that had AVI’s in it...my explorer started crashing because of it since about a week ago. Every time I tryed openning up an AVI Explorer would crash.. I did a google search on my AVI problem and arived here. I registered here just so I could do a search and Walla...
Your trick did the job. Now I’m back to the way my system was working just a week ago..
Thanks... You saved the day...

wattster Guest | Yeah - everytime I moved to an AVI file in explorer, I had a window pop up telling me that Explorer had encountered a problem and needed to shut down. I didn’t know why this happened, so I followed the instuctions above:-
Start>Run and type cmd
In the command window, type the following:-
regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
Sorted.
Thanks to BarbershopJohn and stillonxp
Very helpful. Cheers!

cookiamos Guest | The explorer bug with vid files could be the preview but it could also come from the file itself. I once had a video file who make explorer go nuts each time i opened the file he was in. I manage to open the file but my windows almost froze during the process. I then used riverpass to repair the file. It solve the bug entirely.Sometime during download or a tranfer, the file get corrupted. Riverpass correct the format and rebuilt it in the format u want.
