I’m encountering the same problem, I get the same error with all my players, RealPlayer, DivX player and the ones you mentioned. Does anyone know somewhere I can find the answer to this?

may be of use to people with this problem. It allows killing the process that’s locking the file; renaming, moving and deleting locked files. It pops up as a dialog box only when necessary.

I have roughly the same problem as all described above, including Qlippoth’s headache. I want to move files, from my laptops HD to en external one. As soon as I start the filetransfer computer freezes. Gotta turn it off by pressing the button, not even Ctrl-Alt-Del works. Tried the 'regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll' thingie but since it’s not really that problem I have I didnt notice any difference.
Any ideas?
PS. Dunno how to check the external drive for bad clusters, any howtos out there?

NeigeFraiche Guest | I had this problem, and I didn’t wanna turn preview off, so I experimented with a few things and uninstalling xvid worked for me. Somehow the videos still play, but I also get thumbnails/previews no problem. I must have had 2 versions installed at once and they were confilcting or something... just a suggestion for something else to try for other people with this problem

nepawoods Guest | Like several others in this thread, I am having this problem on Windows 2000. When I open a folder (with windows explorer) containing certain avi files, the explorer process goes to 100% cpu utilization, and stays there. regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll is not recognized on Windows 2000.
How can I uninstall all my codecs then reinstall?

zach Guest | Wow that problem really needs to be documented somewhere. I have been struggling with this problem for months, tried removing Nero, non-microsoft shell extensions, reformatting a TB worth of hard drives, and the shmedia.dll was the problem all along.

tiredofthisshi_ Guest | Same problems as above. Downloaded latest DivX - problem was fixed partially(only preview but crash on open). Uninstall! Downloaded Xvid codec from: http://www.xvid.org/Downloads.15.0.html

Gurra Guest | Had similar problem but with MPEG files. As soon as cursor moved over file ***BANG**** and explorer crashed.
Your suggestions here led me to check codecs and found 3ivx and PICVideo™ MJPEG Codec non functional. I uninstalled the later and ***WOW*** problem is gone!!! Thx for sharing!

OK, I found this somewhere and it has fixed my problem: =========== I had exactly the same problem until I came across this handy little registry hack. Run regedit and find the following key :- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler Delete the “Default” value then close. You should now be able to see .avi previews almost instantly but without the crashes ============== Hope it helps you too”
This registry value is non existent on my system. I am running Win XP Media Center. Any ideas?
