No sound transferring Sony video clip to iMovie

I transferred a batch of video clips from a Sony digital camera into iPhoto (sound OK) and drag the clips into iMovie and lost sound on all except a couple of clips.

Would you know if I need a codec? The clips are in mpg but no mention of the sound file extension anywhere.

iLife does not work properly with video from Sony (STILL) camera photos.
