I have a Windows 98 (not SE) OS, and was wondering if there was any hope AT ALL that I would be able to play videos with the Windows Media Player Codec 9, or if I had to update my computer (which I would rather not do...).

Any replies are appreciated.

Whee!

For Windows Media Video 9 playback (fourcc WMV3) - general solution

You can download the codecs package for Windows Media Player 6
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx third 'download now' button
The package will include everything except Windows Media Screen 9, which is seldom used.

You can download the codecs package for Windows Media Player 7
same page, second 'download now' button

If you have trouble playing avi’s with the WMV 9 codec (fourcc WMV3) then use the fourth 'download now' button on that same page.

You can download Windows Media Player 9. It will contain all the codecs. (This only works if you have Windows 98SE or higher)

You can also download Windows Media Encoder 9.

also want to add that Media player 9 or 10 can not be used because they are for Windows 98 Second edition and above only.

I used to be able to play WMV 9 using Windows 98 first edition and media player 7 only. After reinstall of Windows (yearly ritual, not by choice), Media player can’t play WMV 9 any more.

You can’t use Windows Media Player 9 in Windows 98 First Edition, but you can get the codec packages on this page.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx
Choose the one for the version of Windows Media Player you have (6.4 or 7.1).
If you’re still having trouble playing the file (this may happen if it’s a wmv3 file in an avi container) get the vcm package on the same page.

Are you absolutely certain you downloaded all three of these files and ran them?
http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/6/1/461e47d9-bff9-4d3f-b97c-93476581f6ef/wmp6cdcs.exe
http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/8/a/98a6cb2d-6659-485e-b1f9-2c0d9bf6c328/wmv9VCMsetup.exe
http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/c/2/5c29d825-61eb-4b16-8eb8-58367d0464d5/WM9Codecs9x.exe
Also are you absolutely certain the file you’re using needs the fourcc WMV3 or WMV1? Use avicodec to check.

One last thing. Does avicodec say whether the file is asf or avi? It should be on the first line. If it’s avi I’m thinking it could be truncated. If that’s the case you can use media player classic, avipreview, or virtualdub to attempt to play it. If it’s asf (wmv) I’m stumped. Could it be drm-protected?
