Foreign subtitles question

Hi I just downloaded Iranian subtitles to some movies and what shows up is random weird characters instead of Iranian characters. I was just wondering if some could advise me on what to do, I imagine I need a language pack or something but couldnt find anything? I’m using WMP11 and Windows Vista if that makes a difference.
