I just bought a DVD which contains an WMV HD Movie. I bought in in the USA and now i´ll like to watch it on my German Laptop in Germany..
Everytime i like to play it it tries to get a licence and then telling me that the playback is not possiblle outside Canada and the US... How can i change the file or what can i do to play the file in HD on my comp...

anonymous Guest | I’m a bit puzzled by your mention of wmv and licensing in all this. (Maybe it’s a data cd with a wmv file? In that case ignore everything I’m going to say)
I just presume you have a regular dvd movie that won’t play. My best guess is it has to do with the region code. You bought a region 1 dvd (North America) but you’re in region 2 (Europe). It’s something the movie industry has created for reasons I don’t quite understand yet. There’s ways to get around it though. Some are listed on this page.

funkyAL Guest | Yes it is a data CD. I can copy the wmv HD file to my computer.. it is not the region code thing because i´m able to view the normal dvd with a region killer.. It is just the wmvHD file that i cant play .. because it tries to connect to the licence server and then telling me that i´m outside the US.. and because of that not able (allowed to) see it..

anonymous Guest | I hope you won’t mind my wild suggestions (these are out of the blues). It’d be nice to know how the WMV is able to tell you’re outside the US. If it’s by language, then install an english language copy of Windows XP(?), if it’s by region (regional options under control panel) match those used in North America. If it’s by area code/location from modem properties, set a location in the United States or Canada. It could also be telling by DVD region. In that case set your DVD Player’s region to region I. If it’s by IP address (odd), just spoof your IP address (assign IP address manually without connecting to the net) to a North American ISP’s IP address.

thanks 4 your help and suggestions first of all 
I changed my regional settings but it didn´t help/work. It can´t be the area code from modem properties because i´m using a T1 broardband connection.. I didn´t install the english language copy like you sugessted (but i can´t belive it´s that because the message says outside of the US or Canada .. and there it´s French too ).... The last thing you said is
“just spoof your IP address (assign IP address manually without connecting to the net) to a North American ISP’s IP address." - quite nice .. but i read in the dvd (which i bought) that you have to connect to the internet than you get a licences for 7 days .. so if you stay away longer than 7 days from the internet you can´t watch it.. as soon as you reconnect you are able to watch it.. i mean if you are of cause inside the US or Canada..
Is there no way to crack the file and getting a licence free HD version? Maybe any other suggestions?

Deathnutz Guest | I have this problem too. Mine is with Terminator 2 Ultimate Edition. The second disc has the film in HD on wmv file but they require you to install that crummy dvd sofware that usually boots up with most dvds when you put it in the drive on the pc. It won’t let you open the files with Windows Media Player because of this “licence” intergrated into the file. We need to remove this licence.

Chief Guest | The WMV HD has a DRM protection policy.
Some companies leave them open and some (Lion Gate etc) some have On disk DRM which means will play at home but the moment you remove the file from the disk it wont play because the key is burned in the disk its self.
The other solution (T3, Step Into Liquid) is IP based, that is also how they know in which region you are in.
If you can get your self an IP (Or make it look like your IP is within) that region then you can obtain a license for that movie for a period of 7 days to view off line.

ccnz2 Guest | you can most definetly fake a us ip address and fool media player I have seen this exact thing....a wmv file that is region locked to us and canada then when ip ischanged to a open proxy US address the file acquires the licence thinking the machine is in the US or canada no problem.
Problem is you have to do this everytime you watch it....
there needs to be a working,tested way of washing the DRM/licence issue off the file...

DRM files are encrypted, which means that they must be decrypted before you can watch them. Only Windows Media Player has the ability to decrypt and play DRM-protected files. As of April 20, 2005, there is no known way to break through the encryption. (The only exception is if it is DRM V2, which a program called FreeMe can crack. But most videos use DRM V1, which has not been cracked yet.)
