Tips to find real dvd files

I am kind of new to movie downloading. I tried to convert avi file of movie and converted to dvd file. But when I played it from home DVD player, the picture is not sharp as DVD backup.
When I go to a movie download site, it lists a whole bunch of different formats for one movie. For example, TS DVDR-SWiNE, Telesync, dvd-rip,etc. (whatever that means).
How can I find real dvd files that are not the ones need to be converted?
Or, if I really need to convert, which converting software will give me the best quality pictures?
