HI IT SEEMS YOU ARE ALL MISSING THE POINT HERE ON THIS ISSUE ITS LITEARLLY A VERY VERY SIMPLE FIX, ALL IT IS IS A CORRUPTED FILE FROM WHEN CODECS WAS INSTALLED/UNINSTALLED...HERES WHAT TO DO

GO TO MY COMPUTER

C\grinRIVE

WINDOWS

SYSTEM32

LOOK FOR THE FILE CALLED .. Ac3audio.ax

WHEN YOU SEE IT LEFT CLICK ON IT HOLD LEFT CLICK PRESSED AND DRAG IT OUT OF THAT FOLDER ONTO YOUR DESKTOP

ONCE THERE CLOSE THE FOLDER AND TRY THE FILES YOU HAD PROBLEMS WITH THEY WILL WORK FINE NOW
********************************************

THIS SAME FIX ALSO WORKS WITH ERRORS CAUSED WITH THE FILE CALLED .. xvid.ax

Thanks topcat139.

I’ve tried many fixes for this problem, and that download was the easiest / quickest fix I’ve tried.

It was a problem with heaps of my folders but after running that patch I haven’t had Windows crash yet.

Quick link for the preview fix.

w00t!!!!

This did it so quickly! I tried 5 different things over 24 solid (seperate) hours and this one did it perfectly first time!!!

http://www.j79zlr.com/reg.php?id=42

Just click the first link, save to desktop via File/Save page as...

Go to desktop and click the file, press y, press enter, and it’s DONE!

I had the same problem, and I turned off the 'preview' feature of windows. You can go to tools->folder options and switch to Windows classic settings. It worked for me!! smiley

The problem is codecs in general - Quoted from Mootlogic “By downloading GSPOT I was able to see which codecs were needed to play the given file. "

Then reinstall the codec that is needed

I am not a big fan of installing more programs (additions) just to resolve ongoing issues that should just not be happening but i took the advise and downloaded the all in 1 codec pack and it worked a charm.....

i am always very sceptical about deleting things, especialy when i have no idea what they do so trying to fix by installing more has been the answer in this case and has also shown me how little i had to begin with as it was very rarely that my windows media player would actualy play most avi files to begin with.

Big thanks for pointing out the codec pack as not only has it solves the crashing but has also allowed me to view all of my media using WMP. smiley

it’s a codec problem for sure. My problem was same, Windows explorer and all directshow players were crashing with certain codecs. But VLC and NeroVision was working fine since they have their own overlay drivers.

1.I choose an Xvid file.
2.I uninstalled all codecs that supports Xvid.
3.Checked with Gspot that no other xvid codecs installed.
4.Played the video file, directshow still crashes.
5.Uninstalled audio codecs.
6.chrash persists.
7.I’ve examined what media player does when search for an xvid compatible codec with Sysinternal’s Filemon. And I saw mediaplayer’s last call was pointing a ffdshow folder.

My crashes are gone after deleting C:\Program Files\ffdshow folder. There is still an ffdshow.ax under win32 folder, so VLC still works.

good luck, it looks there is not one solition for this, every case is unique.

person wrote: I have WinXP-SP2. I have had similar problems in the past - certain .avi:s crashing the media player and windows folders (when preview was enabled). I really wanted to watch one video so I fired up mozilla to google the net. I wound up here, and I read the post just above, the one mentioning XviD. So I tried uninstalling XviD. That was the only change I did. And vóila: the video in question worked without problems. Thanks everyone!

IT’s ALL TRUE!!! UNINSTALL XVID!!! FUCKING SOFTWARE!

Sorry to resurrect this thread... I just to add my 2 cents.

I had this same problem tonight after a crash and just fixed it. My point is that GSPOT IS MY BEST FRIEND, as it can actually figure out which codec is corrupt. In my case it was ffdshow.

ok this just started happening to me today...which is weird because i was watching a movie last night and everything was working fine...soo im not exactly sure what cuased this problem exactly but i typed in “regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll” in Run like someone advised and that solved my Explorer problem but not the WMP problem. I uninstalled the Xvid Codecs and tried the video again...that didn’t do anything...I uninstalled Vorbis something something and all the other stuff it came with...and the video started working...sort off..i can hear the sounds but can’t see the video...i was informed that i needed Xvid Codecs to see the video..i reinstalled the Xvid Codecs it and it WORKS! well..I guess another solution to this problem is to uninstall whatever codecs you installed ONE-BY-ONE and see if the video works..then jst reinstall any codecs u need to if anything goes wrong like me (sound but no video) ... anyways good luck to anyone that encouters this problem...gave me a headache tryin to figure it out

Got same problem where any AVI file I tried to view or copy was crashing Windows Explorer or Windows Media Player 11.

Solution was to uninstall the CCCP (Combine Community Codec Pack)
