I have a problem with “some” movies. When I go in the folder where the movie is, the folders are automatically set to miniatures (so we see the first frame of the movie). When I get in the folder of a “bugged” movie, all the other movies display correctly, but this one has the windows media player icon on it (they’re all same movie types) and windows tries to load the first frame of the movie. After about 10-20 seconds of trying, I get an “Unexpected Error Occurred” and Windows Explorer crashes (everything disapears but the background image, then everything comes back except the folder where the movie is).

However, I can use the DivX Player to view the movies in question and they play just fine.

I’m asking this here because I have a feeling it’s a codec problem. I have like 10 different codec packs installed so I doubt I’m lacking the codec (since I can watch the movie anyway) but maybe there’s a codec conflict with the windows one or something.

Anyway, I’d really like to know why.

Windows Explorer and Windows Media Player aren’t good at handling corrupt or incomplete avi files and will sometimes crash (Windows Explorer while previewing and Windows Media Player while playing). If memory serves the DivX player is able to play incomplete avi files. The trick would be to disable previewing or customize the particular folder so it doesn’t preview.
- to disable preview in a specific folder: click view and choose icons or list or details (anything other than slideshow or thumbnails). other option is to click view customize this folder then pick classic (icons only) view.
- to disable all video previews go to run and type “regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll” without the quotes. (works with windows xp only)

P.S: If the avi’s that cause the crash are always of the same codec and gspot says they’re not corrupt, it would be a codec problem. I had that with DivX 5.0.3 once, where all divx 3 videos would crash when played or previewed in windows explorer, but it went away when I updated to DivX 5.0.4. (It’s a documented bug with the k6-2 processor and mentioned on the divx site)

which says how divx files will crash explorer when previewed in windows xp sp2. it’s the new data execution prevention feature in sp2. If you download an updated version of divx (5.2.1) the problem should be fixed.

Well, 1: I don’t have SP2
2: the movie should be complete (it’s done downloading and all).

And is there a program that kinda “completes” movies like that? I think I heard of that before but I can’t really remember.

Just because a download completes does not mean the file is complete. Sometimes for whatever reason a download can end right in the middle, and you’ll get a popup saying the download was finished, but it only downloaded 65MB of say a 90MB movie. So completion of a download does not guarantee file completeness (or even integrity for that matter).
If you want to be absolutely sure feed the file into gspot and it will tell you if the filesize is correct. And feed the file into virtualdub to see if it has bad frames or missing segments in the middle. (To do that click on file, open, but before you pick the file check 'ask for extended options after this dialog' at the bottom. then check the two boxes 're-derive keyframe flags' and 'open in avifile compatibility mode'. this will scan the file for errors and may take a while if the file is big)

I had the same problem like you say
after I read your post I checked one of the divx file with gspot and found the in use 2 type on incoder one of them was from new software I install 2 weeks ago and it called “intervideo” I uninstalled it and walla it stop
crash and i can see the thumbnails again.

My Windows Explorer crashes always whithin 2 seconds when I evn lay my mouse pointer over the file name of an AVI file. I don’t have any preview panes. In the same directory I have a link to the same AVI file. The link keeps working just fine and also starts the AVI file with my player. I have assosiated my AVi files with BS-Player.
At first I tried to remove all AVI assioates and reassosiate, but it did not work. At this moment I had Windos XP SP2, so I decided to remove SP2.
After that all AVI files worked just fine.
Today I reinstalled SP2 hoping that this installation would be 'better'. And, as you might guess, I again have that same problem...

I’ve been having the same problem, but it only started happening recently. So I went through a bunch of different things, such as reinstalled Windows Media Player 10, then the DIVX codec, then read some of the post’s here and removed a couple of recently installed programs. Then there was one more program left to remove, SoundForge, sure enough after uninstalling it the problem went away! yah! I suspect not the video codec, but maybe the sound codec or use of.. Since SoundForge isn’t about video... Enjoy!

I have been having this same problem with Windows Explorer crashing. I have tried everything I saw in this thread. When I saw the tip about uninstalling SoundForge, I thought that might be it. Unfortunately, I uninstalled SoundForge, and still the problem persists. Help! Any other ideas? I have narrowed the problem down to certain .avi files — whenever I click on these files (in any Windows Explorer view) or try to display them in thumbnail view I crash, but I cannot figure out what is wrong with these files.

Any thoughts?

I ended up formatting my computer, and now the problem is gone, meaning the previously problematic files now display correctly.

I only installed the main codec files this time (DivX and updated Windows Media Codecs) which would confirm my guess about the conflicting codec(s).

I don’t have any more information though, sorry.

Thanks for the response. When you say you ended up formatting your computer, do you mean completely wiping the hard drive and reinstalling everything from scratch? I had hoped it wouldn’t come to that! :|

same problem, i had ace mega codec pack..and xvid installed separately, so what i did was just uninstall xvid and the problem was gone.

I have WinXP-SP2. I have had similar problems in the past - certain .avi:s crashing the media player and windows folders (when preview was enabled). I really wanted to watch one video so I fired up mozilla to google the net. I wound up here, and I read the post just above, the one mentioning XviD. So I tried uninstalling XviD. That was the only change I did. And vóila: the video in question worked without problems. Thanks everyone!

By downloading GSPOT I was able to see which codecs were needed to play the given file.

I clicked the “RENDER” button and the it told me that “nevideo.ax” was the culprit.

nevideo is a Nero extension, so I went to www.ahead.de and downloaded updates. Installed the updates and BINGO, my problem was resolved.

It seems maybe most of the issues might merely require diagnosing which codec is causing the issue and upgrading or replacing it.

ace mega codecs pack 6. i thought that i must have a corrupt codec as i was also getting crashes everytime a thumbnail of movie was being displayed. these codecs sorted my computer right out.

Windows crashes playing a divx 3 encoded avi movie. It crashes expontaneously after 3 or 5 minutes or playing back. I’m running on a laptop compaq, with AMD Duron 1GHZ and 630MB RAM. Please any help is appreciated.

Windows Explorer and Windows Media Player 10 kept crashing every time I opened certain xvid encoded files. I kept reinstalling the xvid codec, but that didn’t seem to help. Finally, I decided to install the latest version of divx and voila, problem solved.

yea xvid codec is the culprit after i uninstalled that the xvid encoded avi files work fine....must be some sort of conflict between media player 10 and the old xvid.

I was haveing the same problems... crashing and couldn’t play xvid. uninstalled nimo v5 build 9 just like the thing told me. OH what thing... ACEMCP603PRO.exe
