AVI's displaying colour bands during playback

My .avi videos have started to display colour bands when being played. This never used to happen but I cant think of anything specific that has changed on my PC. I have uninstalled and re-installed ffdshow and other codecs but still the movies are playing with horizontal bands. I thought it was a code a problem but now I’m stumped!
