The AOL Ultravox protocol is open-source, does that mean it’s safe to post/host a program that can download AOL NSV files?

marc Guest | oh for all those who are on windows looking for an alternative to winamp that DOESNT play NSV files at 100x speed - download VLC media player - works like a charm

d00d Guest | yeah VLC has the shoutcast directory in the playlist, now if i could figure out how to add the AOL/Winamp NSV Video feeds
I’ve had “some” luck saving nsv streams to disk using the streamripper/winamp plugin.

You have asked a very useful question - Is making an NSV downloader legal? I’m surprised you’re the first one to wonder about this out loud.
First off, I am not a legal expert. But I do have an opinion about the subject. By making the protocol open to the public, AOL is more or less inviting us to design software that is able to play the Ultravox files. Playing is one thing. Downloading may be a different story.
AOL’s media is copyrighted. As users, we are permitted to watch it but almost certainly not allowed to duplicate it. By copying the media from AOL’s server to your computer, you are duplicating it. However, the software used to make the duplication is not necessarily illegal. My best guess is that the software itself would be legal, but by downloading copyrighted media you would be *using* the software illegally.
I hope this is the way it works, because it frees us to write the software.

FrameServe Guest | Thanks for your opinion Steve_NSV. I have coded a small download utility that works but was wondering if I should share it. It looks like AOL is inviting us to write programs by releasing the protocol specs. If software like WM Recorder and HiDownload can exist than why not something small for AOL NSV?

Whether you choose to share your experiment is completely up to you. I am just happy that it has been shown to be possible! If you can do it, then others may be able to as well.
If you release the program, it is possible that AOL may attempt to shut this thread down. (They already did so for a website that was publishing instructions for obtaining RM and QT copies of their media.) They may even try to go after you and send a cease and desist notice. (I’m not sure there is any legal basis for this, but they might do it out of pure intimidation factor.) To keep yourself out of trouble, it would be wise to remain anonymous. However, if your program works, it will quickly find distribution on the Internet. You would be amazed at how many people would love to have this utility.

FrameServe Guest | Steve_NSV, You’re referring to all-streaming-media.com? Was that before Ultravox went open-source? I have a 10K .7z file which i’m wondering if someone will take a chance and host.

Yes, I was talking about all-streaming-media.com. That’s quite sharp of you to notice. Unfortunately, I do not know if the Ultravox site was online yet.
Try uploading the file to http://www.rapidshare.de. It is a free file-hosting service that allows unlimited downloads. Then you can post the link here in the forum. :-) I’ve been using rapidshare.de for a while now... I think it’s one of the best-kept secrets on the Internet.

Here is the link to your video:
http://nsvod-prod-mods-rtr.stream.aol.com/uvox?cachefile=/aol/us/aolmusic/artists/sony/aerosmith/aerosmith_justpushplay_350.nsv
Unfortunately, getting the link is the easy part of the equation. Downloading it is the trouble. If you download with HiDownload or anything else that does not recognize the UNSV:// protocol, then the video will not play back correctly in Winamp. Trying to solve this problem is the main purpose of this forum.
Jon van Camp,
I’m not sure yet how to convert an NSV to other formats. Somebody will have to write a filter or plugin for VirtualDub or AVISynth.

That’s exactly it. We need a program that can capture Ultravox streams. There are several tools out there that can capture Winamp streams, for example StreamRipper, but none of them support AOL videos.
Keep checking this forum... we’re trying to find a solution.

MPB Guest | AOL Downloading
1.Play the video in AOL Media Player (it will pop up when you click on the video)
2.Right click near the video playing and select 'view source'.
3.The notepad window that will appear should say 'video.index'. If it doesn’t, repeat step 2.
4.hit control(ctrl)and f. then type into the box “fugu”. Don’t ask, it just works.
5.Keep on hitting find next until you get to the last 'fugu'.
6.This is the hard part so follow these instructions exactly
7. For example I will take this bit of code:
FUGU.PlayVideoLarge("/aol/us/aolmusic/specials/2005/live8/london/london_018_stereophonics_superman;bitrates:700,460,320,120,28”
You see the highlighted bit? That’s the address you need. Copy from where it starts (/aol) to just before the semi-colon
8.Next, add an underscore (_) to the end of the code you copied, then type “dl.mov” without the quotes.
9.Finally, copy all of the code you have left, so it looks like this:
/aol/us/aolmusic/specials/2005/live8/london/london_018_stereophonics_superman_dl.mov
10.Then just before the "/aol” part, add this little address:
http://progressive.stream.aol.com
so you end up with:
http://progressive.stream.aol.com/aol/us/aolmusic/specials/2005/live8/london/london_018_stereophonics_superman_dl.mov
There you go! And if you don’t understand, just ask
