Interesting idea. I doubt that would work unless you could set up a unsv:// streaming server, which is probably an AOL secret technology. :-(

Heh-heh... It’s a workaround, not a solution. I’ve downloaded the RM and QT versions of some videos, but they’re not nearly as good quality as the NSV version. The NSV has the latest technology AAC audio and a very good MPEG-4 type video stream.

Vespian Guest | The workaround may work, for “Sessions at AOL”, but, does it work equally as well for the various other music videos offered on the site?

Vespian Guest | I honestly think that setting up a server is too much work to accomplish a simple thing. Direct capture of the video is our best option. It may not be in .nsv format, but its capturing the video none-the-less. There has to be a way to program a winamp plugin to directly capture video going through it. I know for a fact that there is such a plugin to capture audio.

Abhay Guest | first my idea of setting up stream server is not so complax as this would be for personal computer if we get any sucess to stablish unsv://
Though i agree this is not permanent soultion at all.

How to record NSV media streams from AOL Guest | The page called “How to record NSV media streams from AOL and Netscape” was removed from
All-streaming-media.com due to the attemp to block the site by AOL. Luckily you still can get get lots of other interesting info from the web-site (including media stream recoders) and here is the publication that was unfortunately removed recently:
Find the URL of a Nullsoft video (NSV) stream
To find the URL of Nullsoft video stream you may use Project URL Snooper or any other packet sniffer.
How to record NSV stream from AOL or Netscape
ATM we are not aware of the ability to record NSV streams like the following one
http://demand1.stream.aol.com/ramgen/aol/us/aolmusic/aolmusiclive/2004/evanescence/aolmusiclive_evanescence_intro_350.nsv&uid=AOL_bla-bla-bla
Such files can be downloaded, but their protection doesn’t allow you to watch them.
To download media streams from AOL or Netscape we should find their RealVideo or QuickTime copies first.
Getting RealVideo copy and recording it
Let’s find the RealVideo copy for the following stream:
http://demand1.stream.aol.com/ramgen/aol/us/aolmusic/aolmusiclive/2004/evanescence/aolmusiclive_evanescence_intro_350.nsv&uid=AOL_bla-bla-bla
Follow simple steps:
Change "_350.nsv&uid=AOL_bla-bla-bla” at the end of the URL onto "_bb8.rm”. You will get
http://demand1.stream.aol.com/ramgen/aol/us/aolmusic/aolmusiclive/2004/evanescence/aolmusiclive_evanescence_intro_bb8.rm
Change “http://demand1.stream.aol.com/ramgen/" in the beginning of the URL onto “rtsp://demand1.stream.aol.com/". You will get
rtsp://demand1.stream.aol.com/aol/us/aolmusic/aolmusiclive/2004/evanescence/aolmusiclive_evanescence_intro_bb8.rm
The latter Real Video stream can be recorded by any video stream recorder supporting Real Video streamed through RTSP protocol.
If your URL looks like the following one
http://205.188.214.193/uvox?cachefile=/aol/us/aolmusic/aolmusiclive/2004/evanescence/aolmusiclive_evanescence_intro_700.nsv
then
Change "_700.nsv” at the end of the URL onto "_bb8.rm”. You will get
http://205.188.214.193/uvox?cachefile=/aol/us/aolmusic/aolmusiclive/2004/evanescence/aolmusiclive_evanescence_intro_bb8.rm
Change “http://205.188.214.193/uvox?cachefile=" in the beginning of the URL onto “rtsp://demand1.stream.aol.com/". You will get
rtsp://demand1.stream.aol.com/aol/us/aolmusic/aolmusiclive/2004/evanescence/aolmusiclive_evanescence_intro_bb8.rm
Again we get Real Video streamed through RTSP protocol.
Getting QuickTime (QT) copy
If you prefer to get a QuickTime copy of the following URL
http://205.188.214.193/uvox?cachefile=/aol/us/aolmusic/aolmusiclive/2004/evanescence/aolmusiclive_evanescence_intro_700.nsv
Change "_700.nsv” at the end of the URL onto "_dl.mov”. You will get
http://205.188.214.193/uvox?cachefile=/aol/us/aolmusic/aolmusiclive/2004/evanescence/aolmusiclive_evanescence_intro_dl.mov
Change “http://205.188.214.193/uvox?cachefile=" in
the beginning of the URL onto “http://progressive.stream.aol.com/". You will get
http://progressive.stream.aol.com/aol/us/aolmusic/aolmusiclive/2004/evanescence/aolmusiclive_evanescence_intro_dl.mov

Vespian Guest | To whomever took the time to write, and post that incredibly long analysis... i thank you. It is a workaround, and will work to dl the videos. If only a person could get their hands on that removed editorial.

Steve Guest | huh??? That page, describing how to download AOL videos, was up for a long time! I can’t believe it just *vanished*! Thanx a million for posting the information here. I also hosted an exact copy of the original page here:

Adam Guest | I found this out and made this myself! I am so proud! Lol.......
I got a handy hint, to make it easier to fine the url of an AOL stream. You have to be an AOL member. (Or your friend has to be)
You will need some programs for this:
>>> http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ >> https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&version=1.0&os=Windows&id=10

Adam Guest | That didn’t work so good.... Is there a text limit or something?

RickJones Guest | Anyone know of a way of having a HTML nullsoft streaming player that requests an nsv path to be inserted prior to playing.

Adam, Thanks for the guide! I’ll try it sometime. Unfortunately, finding the URL is only half the problem. The other half is actually getting the video to work once you download it. At least you can get the RM link if nothing else. My success with RM videos has been spotty.
I don’t think you have to be an AOL member to access their videos. Go here, and you can play anything:
http://music.channel.aol.com/videos/sessions.adp
Maybe they have it set up like Yahoo Launch, where you can only play a certain number of videos before you have to log in. I don’t know.
** divingsand, Thanks for the link. Sadly, Streambox VCR has not helped me fix broken NSV videos.
** RickJones, I don’t think I understand your question. If you have installed the AOL Music Player, then you might have the following file on your computer. Is this what you’re looking for?
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nullsoft\ActiveX\2.0\ampxtest.html

C:/Program Files/Common Files/Nullsoft/ActiveX/2.0/ampxtest.html

RickJones Guest | I was after having a nullsoft player on a webpage that could accept different url stream paths by the user, (not just the one already configured by the webmaster).

White Hat Cowboy Guest | The problem is that each stream has a built in header which aquires info on each file from the remote server before it can decode the stream, it’s embedded in winamp so if you just save the video and audio it wont have the right settings... in order to rip it, I think you would probably have to design your own standalone nsv player capable of decoding and then writing to a different format. Im not sure - there might be a way of patching/cracking winamp to do this.

geek1 Guest | solution i’ve found:
use dap (download accelerator plus, im using v.7)
to download the NSV file.
if it won’t let you connect, just change your Agent_id to: “NSV Player/0.0 (ultravox/2.0)"
(without the quotation)
100% works for me
