andrewcronullasydney Guest | Where do I start URL snooper ? If I click on the link that actually starts the video playing and go through the page results I dont get anything that begins with....
http://nsvapp............
So I am thinking I am snooping the wrong page...or using snooper the wrong way.
I load it....go to file....click on “type a url to Load and Sniff”
Any ideas on what I am doing wrong ?
I will list the results I get when I snoop the following link.....for everyone that signs off now because the following is messy and complicated, thanks for putting up me !
Andrew.

melonboy Guest | Andrew,
I’m not sure what you’re doing wrong with url snooper, as I said before I’m no guru. However what I do is start up url snooper and then click the “sniff network” button. I then switch back to AOL site and click the video I’m interested in. Once the video starts to play in the the pop up box go back to URL snooper and there should be a list of results and within those there should be something like...
http://nsvapp-prod-rr.stream.aol.com/fugu?t=uni&tsize=large&wmsid=/aol/us/aolmusic/networklive/2005/keith_urban/nl_keithurban_fullconcert_pt01%3Bsbr%3A700%2C460%2C320%2C120%2C28.wmv&s1=Keith%20Urban&s2=AOL%20Network%20Live&s3=Keith%20Urban%20-%20Full%20Concert%3A%20Part%20One&live=0&angle=0&apos=0&ppos=0&poffset=0&event=&maxbps=0&skin=grey&width=320&height=317&aspect=4&video=true&showui=1&prefs=1&restartUrl=http%3A//mp.aol.com/video.index.adp%3Fmxid%3D1429312%26_AOLFORM%3Dw708.h344.p7.R1&pid=DL&brand=AOL&len=77&country=US&company=AOL&version=1.0&franchise=MUSIC%3A%20Network%20Live%20Full%20Co
Use the instructions I posted earlier to change the above to:
http://nsvod-prod-mods-rtr.stream.aol.com/uvox?cachefile=/aol/us/aolmusic/networklive/2005/keith_urban/nl_keithurban_fullconcert_pt01_700.nsv
I know how frustrating it can be when everyone seems to be able to capture the streams except you so here is Part 2 of the concert...
http://nsvod-prod-mods-rtr.stream.aol.com/uvox?cachefile=/aol/us/aolmusic/networklive/2005/keith_urban/nl_keithurban_fullconcert_pt02_700.nsv
(if you’re after lower quality then change 700 to 460, 320, 120 or 28)
Cheers

Matt-Mateo Guest | AOL doesnt use there Winamp for there defult server anymore they switched all there files to there Windows media server. When you look at the page source the file is listed as a windows media file now. If you want a .nvs file you have to go thru the tutorial and switch the file address.
| | | 18 Nov 2005 09:30 pm |
FrameServe Guest | I guess AOL abandoned the NSV format when they made the Ultravox spec public. I wouldn’t be surprised if they switched whole heartedly to WMV with DRM. MTV.com now DRMs all their videos, it all began with their mtvoverdrive site.

andrewcronullasydney Guest | Thanks for your help everyone. I have successfully download my first file.
I did it in WMS format...not NSV....seems to work okay. Is their much difference between the two.
It would seem putting WMS onto DVD would be easier.
Andrew

Matt-Mateo Guest | Theres not a difference just the file format. The quality is the same and everything. If you want to put it on a DVD I would download the Quicktime version. There much higher quality.

andrewcronullasydney Guest | Gday,
Can I please enrol for my next lesson.....?
I am trying to download the song
“Who Wouldnt Wanna Be Me”
It lives on this page....
http://music.aol.com/archive/main.adp?icid=archive:main
The artist is Keith Urban
It is an older file and the RTSP option doesnt exist.
I want to put it on DVD, what options do I have ?
Is there another format available ?
I have read that NSV is hard to put on DVD. I am also unable to find the right NSV file to Download.
When I use coolbeans It doesnt start downloading, I obviously have the wrong URL.
So what I am after is a way to figure out which to use.
This is the one I tried....it didnt work

It would really be a shame if AOL puts DRM on all their videos... WMV DRM is so difficult to crack. I have read some success stories on a couple forums, but the techniques are difficult to set up. It involved something about using a certain version of Windows Media Player 9 with a set of hacked DLLs running on Windows XP SP1. There are some very determined people out there trying to strip the DRM. The trouble is that Microsoft is aggressively plugging every hole that people find in the DRM scheme and pushing out “fixes” with its Windows Updates feature.
I’m not sure where these trends are ultimately headed, but it may not be long before all online media is DRM-protected. In fact, all television may soon be protected, with digital satellite channels already encrypted in a seemingly foolproof format and with Broadcast Flag just around the corner for ATSC HDTV. Will Hollywood actually win this battle and close Pandora’s Box for good, taking the control they have long desired over users' media? Or will free-spirited minds prevail and defeat the media moguls' plans for total control?
I don’t know, but it is frustrating to think that freely downloadable and playable media may be a relic of the past.

Are the QT streams really higher quality than .NSV steams? I’ve been capturing the nsv streams on the assumption they were the best quality streams on offer from AOL site!... sounds like I’ll be starting all over again cos I’m after the highest quality I can get

andrewcronullasydney Guest | Ok, thanks for all of your tips. I have now worked out how to download NSV files.
They arnt very friendly files though. I dont know how I am going to put them on DVD.

Matt-Mateo Guest | Most of the Quicktime streams are bigger files. Sometimes I find a Quicktime stream thats not but thats only happend once. You don’t need a special program to download them either just follow the tutorial from the begining and right click the file and save as. They look great on TV and there not fuzzy at all.

Wannabe Rep: 0 Joined: 21 Apr 2005 Posts: 58 OFFLINE | I tried downloading some QT videos a while back, and to me they were obviously not as good as the NSV versions. Even though the files were larger, they had more compression artifacts and the audio was inferior. Has AOL improved the quality of their QT files?

melonboy Guest | From downloading a few files the other day it seems to me that the QT versions sound better. The larger QT files also appear to look a bit better than there nsv counterpart. However it’s the end result (the “end result” being playing the vids on a dvd) that matters to me and I haven’t had the chance yet to go through the conversion process and compare the quality of the QT & nsv versions via dvd playback yet.
It would certainly be ironic if after all this time we’ve been capturing the wrong stream! (ie .nsv instead of QT)

Wannabe Rep: 0 Joined: 21 Apr 2005 Posts: 58 OFFLINE | Indeed, that would be ironic. From the clips I compared QT vs NSV about a year ago, the NSV was so much better quality I didn’t even give it a second thought. The QT was 15 fps; the NSV was 30 fps. The QT had blocky compression artifacts; the NSV looked smooth and beautiful with its unprecedented 700kbps video bitrate. The QT had lousy 22kHz sound; the NSV had lovely AAC stereo. In fact, the quality of the QT videos almost harkened back to the day of music videos that were included on Enhanced CDs in the 1990’s. Comparing the QT and the NSV was like night and day.
Based on the testimony you’ve provided, it sounds as though AOL has greatly increased the encoding quality of their QT files. I’ll have to check some of them out and see for myself.

Wannabe Rep: 0 Joined: 21 Apr 2005 Posts: 58 OFFLINE | I just went back and looked at an old QT and compared it to the NSV. Indeed, the quality difference was not as great as I remembered. In fact, the QT has great color and clarity, noticeably better than the NSV. And the audio is 44kHz stereo, not 22kHz like I thought.
However, the QT still bothers me because it is only 15 fps, compared to the NSV’s 30 fps. I am caught in a difficult decision here over which is better: Great picture quality at a low frame rate, or slightly inferior picture quality at a smooth frame rate? I suppose if newly encoded QT files are 30 fps, then they could look better than the NSV versions.
The audio in my old QT file is terrible. Electric guitars sound like distorted ocean waves. The NSV audio wins hands-down. In fact, most of the NSV files I’ve downloaded have decent audio despite having a sickeningly low 48kbps bitrate. I’ll have to download a newer QT clip and see if the audio has improved.

Tryed to installl vp5 with your inf file, but gspot still doesn’t detect the codec. What could that be?
So i’m still not able to convert the nsv files to avi...
Some help is welcome!

RicoSuave Guest | Just found this forum today and a lot of interesting info. Wanted to chip in and say I’ve had success downloading complete .mov files from aol using Streambox. I know this is a NSV thread but I thought people would be interested that the .mov might prove to be more useful. I’ve been getting very nice quality .movs that usually weigh in around 30-70 megs with video bitrates between 1.2 - 2.0 mbps. I got and can play them back on my computer no problem. HAs anyone else tried downloading and converting .movs? I haven’t tried the nsv yet because the quality with the .movs I got were great. Now here’s the problem. The conversion. I’ve tried several programs with no luck. QuicktimePro will not export the file. RadTools can’t convert it....sticks at 99%. So far the only luck I’ve had is TMPGENC but there is no sound. The sound is obviously protected in some manner. The only way I’ve been able to copy sound is with Total Recorder...but even with that I’ve only been able to record what is going through the desktop mixer and not directly so the sync is off and I have to open up the file in a wav editor and try and resync it up again...a lot of work, right. So if anybody has any ideas they’d be appreciated. Thanks

morti Guest | I didn’t read the whole thread, too long. I only whant to mention one thing:
I did download some ultravox encripted .nsv videos and stored them to my hd. when i tryed to play them in winamp it failed. but then when i streamed them to myself with a webserver sending the mimetype misc/ultravox (i think, it’s been a while) it worked!
maybe this information helps?
and is there some progress? can i expect an unuvox tool in short?
