If sound plays with some files, but not with others, then you’d need an audio codec. If that’s the case go here to find out which codec you’re missing.

If you hear no sound whatsoever you might be missing sound card drivers. First go to your device manager by going to run, and typing devmgmt.msc then pressing enter. Look under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers. If you don’t see your sound card listed, or you see any items with a yellow exclamation mark you may have missing drivers. In that case find out what model sound card you have then go to the manufacturer’s web site and download the drivers. (Drivers are files that allow your operating system (in this case Windows XP) to work with a specific piece of hardware)

Hi, If you your system manifacturer is intel just note your motherboard name and visit to www.intel.com there keep you cursor on Support & Downloads and click downloads then select the link Desktop Boards Driver Updates and click on the link of your Mother Board name after that select your OS and after you see the list of drivers see for audio controller and download it and install it after you install it your PC will have sound.
