You might want to feed the file into gspot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot) or avicodec (http://avicodec.duby.info) to find out.
Which tool are you using to convert to AVI? If you’re using VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org), it shouldn’t have any problem reading MPEG-1. It won’t read MPEG-2 though. There’s a slightly modified version that does.
