Converting AVI to Vob crashes computer

been using DVD santa for about two years now no major problems! Until last week. Now every time i try to convert any avi file to dvd format the computer either crashes or tells me the programme has had a problem and needed to shut down. Now thinking DVD santa had a problem i uninsatalled then reinstalled, no luck still happening, tried a variety of other software, and the same thing happened. Then i tried reinstalling windows. Still same problem. Any help would be great
