David8 Guest | Hello, I am trying to edit some movie files i recorded with my digital camera in Windows Movie Maker. When i try to import them into my library windows movie maker just crashes. I downloaded the gt codec and i can watch it in windows media player fine. I dont understand what wrong this used to work for me all the time even without the gt codec.

If you have no idea, feed the video into gspot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot) and tell me what the fourcc is (item in the codec box in the upper right under video)

David8 Guest | What happens is I click play in the preview window and it plays for a few seconds I can hear the sound fine but the picture looks like this http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/4516/screwvm9.jpg then movie maker just closes by itself. No error messages or anything comes up.

I’m going to take a WILD shot and say somewhere, somehow, you have the GrandTech Camera Codec installed on your PC. It’s a VERY unstable codec (see http://www.virtualdub.org/oldnews
(see the entry for 10/13/2003)) - basically if you have a codec with an unknown fourcc (even if it’s not GTCC), it will hijack it and try to play it no matter what’s in it. My guess is GTCC is trying to play MJPG movies on your PC (they should normally be handled by quartz.dll, but there’s no vidc.MJPG entry in the registry for that because it’s DirectShow).
Here’s 2 ways you can remedy this:
1. find gtcodec.dll on your hard disk (do an advanced search and look for system and hidden files and in system folders) and delete it (or move it to a safe temporary location)
2. go to the registry editor (regedit.exe) and delete the entries HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32\VIDC.GJPG (or any entry that has gtcodec.dll in it) and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\drivers.desc\gtcodec.dll
If it doesn’t work, I don’t know what else to suggest. (If it does work, let me know, cause then I’ll be really proud of myself!)

Regular Rep: 5Joined: 20 Nov 2004 Posts: 1,269 | I’d like to append. If you have any file named gjpg.dll or in your registry an entry named VIDC.GJPG, also try deleting it. GJPG and GTCC are not the same codec, but they’re related (both from GrandTech).
