Cannot play AVIs recorded at 60 or 30 fps

I have a Canon Powershot S3 IS which has several size/frame settings. Unfortunately, I cannot play videos recorded at 60 or 30 fps. Every media player I have tried indicates that the files are corrupt.

These files do play fine on the camera itself, even if they are copied to the computer, then back to camera later.

Any suggestions other than buying really expensive equipment to edit and play movies with?
