Playing AVIs on the Philips DVD

Recently I put videos that I had made on digital camera to a CD-R using HP CD-writer. The CD-R plays well on the PC using Windows Media Player. But when played on my Philips DVP 642, the error message appears : “Codec not supported”. Do I need to convert my video files to VCD/SVCD format before burning the CD in order to be played on DVD player? What could be the best way out?
