Hi.....I just downloaded what I thought was a movie but it says its an ISO file. Can anyone tell me how I can burn this type of file unto DVD and play it on a regular DVD player? Do i need some sort of software to convert it into a media file?I am a real amateur when it comes to burning DVDs and such. I would appreciate your help. Thanks

iso files are cd images. you can use a cd burning program (nero for example) to burn it straight to cd-r. Be sure you’re opening the iso when running nero, NOT burning a data cd with the iso file on it.
That’s the most straightforward thing people do with iso files.
Note that iso files can contain whatever happens to be on a cd-rom (video, games, music, data, whatever). It’s just an image (copy) of the cd rom, usually stored on a hard disk.

Here are some variations:
Some people have a lot of hard disk space and don’t like to burn cd’s, so they keep their iso on their hard disk and mount them as virtual cd-roms. You’d use a program like daemon tools for that. Then you just treat it like a regular cd. For example for games it makes them faster (it’s faster to read the iso from the hard disk than reading from the cd-rom drive.)

You can also extract the contents of the iso to a folder on your hard disk using certain programs. For example winrar or isobuster.

Now you say the iso file has a movie on it. Depending on what type of movie it has, and what your standalone dvd player can read, you may have some work to do to get your dvd player to play it.
The most common type of files people share are movies in avi files, encoded with the divx or xvid codec. If your standalone dvd player is divx-certified and your video is in divx, all you need to do is burn the iso to a cd-r and the cd-r will be playable on your dvd player. If the video is in xvid or mp4 your dvd player may or may not play it - refer to your manual to see if mp4 or xvid are supported.
In some cases you may get a vcd (mpeg-1) or svcd (mpeg-2) (it will usually be in the name of the file). If your dvd player supports it, burning a cd-r will work as well.
Finally, if neither divx nor (s)vcd are supported by your standalone dvd player, you will just have to do plain conversion of your video file into dvd format, then burn it to a dvd+/-r. There’s a whole market full of products that can do that. Just google for dvd converter.
